(Forty-sixth chapter)

Early evening had fallen over the day like a translucent veil, idlely covering the whole of sky into a mixture of distant white and navy blue, streaked behind the darkened clouds like a painting on canvas.

People around the streets were retreating to their homes, ready to end the day and prepare to fulfil an unpromised rest to themselves at night. Street lights were gradually blinking open, offering more light for anyone to see properly in the dark.

"Come on everyone, let's take a family photo before we end this day."

Mrs Han's voice rang out like an alarm, chirpy and loud but also annoying. Haneul groaned, pretending to massage her legs.

"Can't we skip that part? My whole body is cramped because of the marathon I ran before."

"Who told you to run then?"

Mrs Han retorted back, placing a hand on her hips like a stern mother. Haneul pouted, crossing her arms like an unhappy child conversing with her parent.

"That's because your beloved daughter was chasing me with a death glare. I didn't want to die early."

Mrs Han playfully tsked and poked Haneul's arm, "I am sure you started the playing."

When Haneul opened her mouth to retort, she was cut off by Mr Han who busted out laughing after quietly listening to the conversation. Mrs Han joined her husband in the fits of cackling and Haneul whined like a little child, glaring at both the parents who were laughing at her now.

She then turned to Sowon who was sitting numbly on the other bench, looking lost.

"And Sowon where did you suddenly go? I thought you were chasing me and Namjoon before."

"Oh," Sowon cleared her throat and didn't dare to make any eye contact, "I didn't. I simply went to look around."

The lie easily slipped off her tongue and Sowon felt weird when she realised how much better she was getting at speaking lies.

"Huh, I thought you were chasing us..."

Haneul mumbled in a disappointed manner and kicked a stone on the ground.

"I don't have time to play around like kids."

Sowon's low and cold words froze Haneul for a moment. She stood up and walked up towards her parents, asking them about something and Haneul cast a wary glance at Namjoon who was watching everything from behind.

They shared a look and had one similar question; why was Sowon back to her old attitude? When they thought that she was finally changing and opening up to them, it turned out that she was always the same.

Because people don't change easily.

"Okay, it's getting late. Namjoon, can you please hold the phone and click the photo since you are the tallest?"

Sowon's father requested kindly and Namjoon offered a small smile with a nod.

"Of course."
