1991 - Siberia

Marcella woke up to a scream coming from her neighbour. Cell neighbour.

She turned over in her bed and looked through the cell bars at Barnes. He was fighting something in his sleep, he was in pain and scared.

"Barnes," she mumbled quietly. "Wake up."

He didn't hear her, too stuck in the dream. His chest was rising and lowering. He whined.

Marcella slowly stood up from her mat and walked towards the vertical bars that separated them. "Barnes. Shush, they'll hear you."

If they caught him having nightmares they'd probably wipe him, because nightmares meant fear and fear meant human. She also didn't want to get blamed for the noise and suffer the same consequences.

Barnes's eyes didn't open, and if anything he sounded more in pain than before. Marcella instinctively put her arm through the bars and touched his arm. The cold touch of her fingers made him flinch but it didn't wake him up. Marcella could here heavy boots coming towards them. She hesitantly moved her hand to his face and gently rubbed his cheek with her thumb.

"James," she whispered. "Please, they're coming for us."

Barnes eyes flew open and he launched himself upwards and off his mat. He hit the cold ground with a thud.

"What's going on back there, Soldats?" A soldier yelled.

Barnes and Marcella looked at each other for moment before he rolled over and started doing push ups on the ground. Marcella jumps back onto her mat and turns away from him.

The guard walks up to Barnes' cell, hitting a baton against it. He watches Barnes for a few seconds before smiling. "You're gonna need at lot more training that that for tomorrow, Soldat. I heard that they're stronger and faster than you, and soon you won't be wanted anymore."

Barnes stops and tilts his head up. He'd heard the screams of the Others yesterday. They were given the serum that would make them like him. Barnes looks at the guard before lifting an arm and putting it behind his back. He stared as he started doing one-handed push ups.

The guard huffs before moving over to Marcella's cell. He leans against it watching her sleep, "Is blondie still sleeping, Soldat?"

Barnes stands up from the ground and looks at Marcella. He doesn't answer and instead grabs the pull up bar in his cell.

The guard walks back over to Barnes, watching the super-soldier. "Must be hard for you. Sleeping right next to this pretty, little, weak thing and not being able to do anything about it."

Barnes froze mid chin up. His face remained emotionless as he slowly lowered down to the ground, his legs extending until they touched the ground. He didn't like this guard, not his tone or his lingering eyes. Barnes walked slowly towards the guard, quietly but menacingly and the guards face went pale. Barnes didn't need to say anything to scare him.
