Marcella walked up to the front desk of the motel. At the desk was a lamp, a binder, a cash box, a radio which was playing the news, and little bell sat on the desk. Marcella reached out and tapped on it.Bling! Bling!
After a few moments a middle aged woman stepped out of the side room. She was quiet and seemed as if she didn't even notice Marcella standing at the desk.
"Hallo," Marcella started, "Kann ich ein Zimmer für heute Abend bekommen?"
The women didn't answer. She instead cleaned the window on the door she came out of. Marcella studied the woman, bewildered for a moment. "Entschuldigung. Hallo?"
The woman didn't notice her again.
Marcella looked outside at the men for a moments. She could drive a little longer and get them to a different motel but they were already so close. Plus, she didn't want to be stuck in the car with Bucky anymore. She didn't want him asking more questions.
She turned back to the woman and looked at the desk. Marcella grabbed the chain of the lamb and turned it off and then turned it on again. The flickering light got the woman's attention. She turned around fast, and smiled.
"Es tut mir leid, liebes!"
Marcella flinched, at the women's volume. It was very loud. Marcella could hear the uncomfortableness in her voice like she only recently learned to speak. The woman came to the desk and quickly started looking for something.
"Kann ich Ihnen helfen?" Marcella asked.
The woman sighed out loud and pulled her hands through her hair. She didn't noticed Marcella speak to her.
"Scheiße!" The woman spit, as she made a specific hand movement. Marcella recognized it and closed her eyes for a second, after realizing her mistake. She should've realized sooner that the woman was deaf. Marcella took a deep breath of relief as the woman lifted her head to her. "Ich bin taub," she spoke and signed as well to Marcella.
Marcella nodded then lifted her hands in the air signing, "No need to speak, I can sign."
The women's eyes widened and she smiled again. She signed, "Thank you, I can't find my notepad. How can I help you?"
"May I get a room for one night?"
"How many people?"
"Four."
"I have a few rooms left that'll fit four people."
Marcella looked into her pocket and pulled out whenever money she had left. She counted it quickly. "I'll take whatever this can get me," she signed back. She passed the cash to the woman and the lady counted through it as well. Then she looked through the binder at a chart.
