The day had come, May 8th. my Birthday. I knew I was going to have a great day but how great? I didn't know. I got up nice and early and had a shower. The boat was docking at 8:00 am so I had enough time to get changed and have breakfast. Again, Joe and I met for breakfast. He surprised me with a present. I opened it and it had a little teddy bear in it. 'Sorry, it's not much" he said " they have a pretty shitty souvenir store.
"Thank you so much" I said " I love it"
I wasn't lying. I actually did love it. And sure it had a creepy face but it meant a lot.We ate until 8:30 and then we got off the boats. We had taken our passports to get off the boat but a man said we didn't need them. It was nice, cold and icy. I had lived in Australia all my life, so I never really saw snow before. The inner kid in me came out and I ran down and made a snow angels. I have to admit, it wasn't as nice as it seems in the movies but it was fun.
Joe and I walked over to the ski and snowboard hire. I decided to go skiing and Joe wanted to go snowboarding. I got on my gear and headed up the mountain. The view from the ski lift was amazing. Alaska always looked so nice on postcards but it looked extra special on person. We reached the top and a man up their showed us how to get off. I was pretty bad and felt uncoordinated. I started going down a very flat area. I felt the adrenaline rush. And then I fell. Joe was a natural though. He wasn't falling at all and he was able to handle the more steeper areas.
An hour later I started to get the hang of it. I was able to go about 50 metres without completely making a fool out of myself. Our time limit was over. So we took of our gear and gave it back.
"Cora" Joe sung. "Do you wanna build a snowman"
"Oh no" I replied "not another frozen reference, the movie came out like 3 years ago"
"So....." He said
"yes" I said excitedly
I had never built one before. The closest I had gone was making one out of sand at the beach (which completely failed).
We spent about and hour or so building it. It was nearly 1:00 pm so we went and had lunch at subway. I got what I always got- 6 inch chicken teriyaki with cheese, pepper, lettuce and tomato. Joe had the other 6 inch.
'So" Joe said "have you had a good birthday"
"The best" I replied
He smiled at me.
We then realised that subway had free wifi so we spent ages using it. I noticed that Joe had commented something nice in all of my Facebook posts. That just made me like him even more. We then parted ways because he wanted to go find some of his friends from high school that lived there. It was nice to have some time alone. I'm used to that normally. I didn't really do much. I just walked around and played in the snow. I noticed that there was a place that you could hire husky's a couple of hours to sled. That just seemed like the coolest thing ever so I planned that I was going to surprise Joe with that the next day.
It was almost 6:30, the time that everybody needed to dock the boat so I went on and had dinner from the buffet. I went to bed excited about the adventure I was going to have tomorrow.
