A Long-Lost Past

(A/N: Fear with a capital 'F' = that ability of a yokai, fear with a normal 'f' = means being afraid. I hope this doesn't confuse people.)

It was a turbulent time for the Nura clan, Rihan had passed away and his sons are more or less what you would describe as sadly incapable of leading the clan. A gentler way of saying incompetent.

The eldest is a quarter yokai with little or no care for leading the clan. Naive and innocent. The youngest is sickly and frail, though he has the desire and the head to lead the clan, he was too unfit. Not to mention the boy had a problem.

"I am telling you, that boy cannot become the Third head!"

"What garbage are you speaking! Are saying just because the boy is weaker than normal he is not allowed to become the next commander!?"

"This is blasphemy, Hitotsume!"

On an eventful night in the Nura estate, 11 council members gathered in the meeting room. It was one of those days where the clan gathered to once again argue and discuss the next head.

Another night of useless babbling that will end in no proper resolution.

"Enough of this!" Gyuuki shouted. "Rather than interrupting like children, let him explain."

Everyone's heads turned to Hitotsume, quite a few members were displeased at the One-eyed yokai however they still listened.

"What I am trying to convey is that Reiji-sama's body is not the issue, It's his abilities!" His voice thundered, "He will cause magnanimous amounts of problems within the clan!"

"What disrespect!"

"Are you comparing a quarter-human to his elder brother who is only a quarter-yokai!?"

"Watch what you are saying, Hitotsume!"

Just like that, chaos erupted once again. Like infants, the disorganized and unfocused conversation restarted.

"Did you forget about the Yakushi clan, their lifespan and health have always been poor however that doesn't stop them from leading!" As soon as everyone heard the mention of a particular clan, everyone's heads turned to look at Zen, the chairman of the Yakushi clan.

Different from his usual boisterous and somewhat comical personality, Zen had remained silent the entire time. He knew the clan would never be able to agree on an heir in the end so he chose to remain silent.

But, now that his clan has been mentioned, I guess it was time to open his mouth.

With a heavy sigh, Zen scanned the room with a sharp look.

"All of you constantly disagree with everyone regarding our next Commander, however, do you even know the true reason why Hitotsume completely disputes Reiji-sama as an heir?" He asked, not particularly looking for an answer. Everyone remained silent but still with furious expressions.

"Rikuo-sama obviously has no intent to succeed the clan, so Reiji-sama is the only option." He continued, "But what is Reiji-sama lacking in your eye, Hitotsume?"

Zen sharply glared at the One-eyed yokai, his eyes judging the very being of the council member before him. The yokai glared back.

"It's not that Reiji-sama is lacking, but, he has too much of it." Exactly, the words that struck worry and fear to different council members. Even Nurarihyon himself was distressed about his grandson's impending future. "But, let me tell you something interesting--."

Zen smiled cheerfully, completely contrasting the grave and serious atmosphere in the meeting.

Unknown to everyone at the time, only Zen knew of the greatness and power Reiji will one day bring to the clan. Though Nurarihyon had an inkling of what his grandson could become, the old yokai was more filled with worry than hope, altogether forgetting Reiji's potential for the future.

And now was the time to reveal that potential.

Dozens of yokais scattered and ran as the council members of the Nura clan gathered once again for the nth time.

However, unlike the usual council meeting for discussing clan issues and possibly arguing immaturely- they were instead called for an announcement. Which is something that does not happen often in this current era.

If this was during Nuraruhyon's prime, such an event would have been a normal occurrence. Back then Nurarihyon was a more impulsive individual, the council that became what it is today wasn't as properly structured as it was back then. The Yokais of the Nura clan mainly relied on the head's decisions and no one said much to dispute his words.

Now, as the 11 council members (not counting Rikuo) gathered in the meeting room, a deadly aura encompassed the entire area. Even the smaller yokais who often dared to eavesdrop on the conversation fled away from the room, afraid that they would faint from the excessive amount of Fear in the air.

The reason for this animosity was due to the individual sitting before them. Sitting on the left of Nurarihyon was a carbon copy of their young master. Plastered on his face was a confident smirk and red eyes just gave off an ambiance of someone you would like to punch in the face.

Though normally, the council chairmen wouldn't show such anger to a meager facial expression of a person, but the fact that there was a tugging feeling on their brain that they knew this person irritated them to no end.

"I have gathered all of you here because of a certain issue that appeared before us," Nuraruhyon began as the council eased in their seats. "I would like to remove all formalities for today and discuss this matter, I hope you don't mind." They all nodded.

"Now then," leaning forward in his seat, Nuraruhyon put on a serious look as he lifted a hand towards his left. "Before I reveal who this person is, I request all of you to hold your questions until I finish my announcement. I am certain that there will be numerous questions, but hold them for now."

With those words said, Nurarihyon slowly exhaled and sat up straight. With a confident yet troubled look, the Supreme Commander directed his eyes to the visitor before him.

"This is Reiji Kareki, and from now on he is going to be the one to train Rikuo- and from what you all are probably are thinking right now. He is my long-lost grandson."

Almost immediately, the council member exploded in a mix of anger and shock.
