Ana and Ben have spent the last twenty minutes talking about Ana's childhood. She spoke about adjusting to her powers and adapting to her unique talents.
"I used to think I was like some sort of super hero," she said, "I could make it snow every Christmas no matter what, I could make a flower grow anywhere, and I could see into other people's minds and watch their imagination. I absolutely loved it. And I could figure out how to get people to like me."
"Sounds like being different wasn't exactly a nightmare," Ben responded.
"It wasn't, for a while. But something happened to me when I was seven . . . And things kind of changed.""What was it?"
"Let's just say I kind of lost control," she closed her eyes, holding back her tears, "My powers got stronger and . . ."
She shook her head, her eyes open and full of pain and dark secrets. Ben caressed her face.
"Hey," he said softly, "You don't have to tell me if you're not ready. Like I said, we'll get through this."
"Okay," was all she could say.
Carly and Peter walked in the room, making their way towards the table Ben and Ana were at.
"May we join?" Carly asked.
The couple scooted over to make room, Carly sitting next to her brother while Peter sat next to Ana.
Peter turned to Ana.
"So it sounds like you've had a rough start," he says, concern.
"My start wasn't nearly as bad as my transition. Or whatever you call it," She said, almost facing him.
"What do you mean?"
"I felt my powers getting stronger. And I was a little, um, insecure at the time," she took a deep breath, "I was friends with these girls who used me for homework and to get boys to date them. They teased me a lot."
"I'm sorry to hear that," Carly said.
"One day, I thought that I'd tell them about my powers. And they made fun of me. Called me a freak. Then they spread a rumor around school that I was the devil's spawn. That I could vex people into doing whatever I wanted and that I practiced spells and rituals for fun. None of it was true."
"Ana," Ben said, grasping her hand across the table.
"I didn't mean to hurt them," she sobbed, "They were just kids."
"What happened?" Peter asked.
"I confronted them one day, asked them why they did all of that. All they did was harass me and lock me in a stall in the girls bathroom. But not before I locked them in the room with me."
"How did you-" Carly started.
"Telekinesis. I got myself out of the stall and lost it. I screamed, cried, so loud. Yet no one outside heard anything. It was like I shielded the whole room. And then next thing I knew, they were on the floor with their foreheads bleeding."
"Annabel, did you-" Ben started.
"I didn't kill them, but their skulls were cracked. I ran away from the bathroom and let them lie there. It took me two classes to realize what I had done. Then I cried, told a teacher that I had found them like that, and they called an ambulance. The girls were fine, but when they tried to tell everyone what I had done, they were quickly deemed off as crazy. I changed schools shortly after."
"For what it's worth, I think they deserved it," Carly said.
"How can you say that? I put them in a fucking ambulance Carly."
