"Where are you going? Nita!" Mirella whispered as Nita tiptoes away. "Trust her. She got us out." I said, placing my hand on Mirella's shoulder. We followed Nita into the door at the end of the hall, where three monitors glowed, and it looked lived in. "This must be where Kovit watches us. Also where he sleeps, I guess." I said, amd thought, Reyes must wanna keep all her Unnaturals in one place.
"How many other rooms are in this building?" Nita asked. "None that I'm aware of." Mirella said, amd I shrugged. "I haven't left my cell in over a week." I said. "Then where do Reyes and the guards sleep?" Nita questioned.
I looked at the monitor and saw Kovit passed out. I stared at the screen before forcing my eyes away. "Does Kovit stay here?" Nita asked, amd I gave her a look like I just said that a minute ago. "Does it matter?" Mirella asked, tying a shirt around her head. "Of course it does." Nita said, "in case he keeps his money around here too." She said. Knocking someone out, stealing their money, I wasn't raised raised to do this?!
"Good point." Mirella admitted. "Let's see if we can find something to help you walk Mirella." I said, setting her down on the mattress. "Because the zannie keeps a pair of crutches lying around." Mirella deadpanned. I began searching the room, avoiding the moniter. "Couldn't find anything." Mirella said. "Me neither." I admitted.
I saw Nita holding a phone. "Good luck calling INHUP, they have no power here." I said, and Nita snapped the phone shut. "Not till we're over the border." Mirella commented. "I don't think you'll want a postcard from this place." Nita said, and I shook my head, looking at the slowly healing cut on my arm. "I imagine it only gets better from here." Mirella said dryly. "It has too, this place is seriously rock bottom." I said, kicking a chair.
We took a step outside and I breathed fresh air for the first time in over a week. I looked back at the building that held me prisoner as my mind flashed to Kovit. He was going to wake up alone in a cell, and be subjected to Reyes' cruelty; my stomach churned as I bit my lip, walking away quickly.
I saw Nita get startled by a monkey as Mirella gave her a strange look, and Nita flipped open the phone like she was deciding something. "Piers this way. K reme, her from when I arrived." Mirella commented, pointing. "You where concious?" I asked, surprised. "We need shoes." Nita said and I shrugged. "I don't." I said, shifting into a cat. "I'm not going back in there." Mirella said, and I didn't blame her. "You mentioned a pier but," Nita said as I hopped down, turning human again, "is there another way out?" She wondered. "I think you'd have better luck in a cage." I deadpanned.
"Unless you happened to bring a machete to carve through the jungle." Mirella supplied. "Can't you turn into something to get us through?" Nita asked, and I scrunched my face up. "When I shift, it can't be for too long all at once. It takes focus to retain humanity. Trying to get all three of us through the jungle as a tiger..... risky." I said, and Nita sighed. "To reach the pier," Mirella continued, "we'll have to go through the death market."
We began marching before Mirella made us pause. "This is it." She said, and I smelled blood and fear and.... "I don't recognize that scent." I muttered, burrowing my eyebrows. "Try not to act...." Mirella trailed off. "Unnatural." Nita and I finished in unison. "Right." Mirella said.
As we walked through the market I heard someone pitching Phoenix feathers and Zannie blood, and the different languages seemed to press in, suffocating me in a crowd of strangers. The diverse nationalities would be impressive, if I didn't feel sick to my stomach. I looked to the left and saw tourists! That's sickening!
"Nita. Jimena." Mirella said, catching my attention. "We've made it to the pier."
