I watched in shock as Boulder laughed. He just took the life of a girl, of my friend, and he was laughing. I felt my blood in my veins, the air around me growing warmer as my vision tunneled. I felt my teeth sharpen in my mouth, and I felt a hand on my shoulder. Nita had a look of shock, and I opened my mouth to speak, but she flinched away, staring at my.... my mouth? I realized just how sharp my teeth where at the moment, and they turned back to human ones.

I looked at the dock, the scent of salty blood wafting up, and fought back tears. In an instant, Mirella, the girl who was tortured beyond belief  was gone. Gone like my parents. I looked around, everyone around us was continuing wit their daily lives. Nobody cared. I turned back to Boulder and saw him coming towards us, I gasped softly and pulled Nita away, hiding behind a stand. I saw Nita stare at the guns, and I wondered what she was thinking, but I bit my lip to keep from growling as he walked past.

The sun was setting as we walked back to Reyes' base, silent and solemn as the sky washed with pink. I looked t the side and gagged, we where walking past a brothel, with the owner saying someone could buy or rent one of the people there, as they simply giggled. Sluts. In the window a person pressed against the glass, and I gripped Nita's arm.

She turned when she felt a hand grip my arm, and I pressed my lips into a line; her amber eyes met mine and I looked away, eyes flickering to the brothel, nose scrunching as I heard giggled and moans drift from the open windows. I wished I could turn of my senses like Nita could turn off her pain. She gave me an unrecognizable look, and turned around, gritting her teeth. Nita stopped suddenly, making my bump into her, and looked at me before walking quickly. I struggled to keep up.

We arrived back at Reyes'  base and went into Kovit's room. I looked at the moniter and fought back a giggle, as silly as that sounded. Kovit layed on Nita's bed, arms reaching into the air, looking bored out of his mind. I guess he didn't hear us come in. "Wow." I muttered, and Nita sat at the desk, flipping open the phone, a look of conflict on her features. Finally, she flipped it open and held it to her ear. I waetched as Nita said the word "mom," before cuttingherself off and dailing a different number. I could hear the dial tone, then a voice picked up. Nita looked shocked. "Who- who is this?" She asked, and I bit my lip. I heard a muffled response, and Nita looked shocked.

"Sorry, wrong number." She said, and I glanced at the moniter screen. Kovit was look it at the camera, arms waving. I felt bad, my stomach twisted into knots, and I remembered how he brought Nita and I books, and kept us company, but it wasn't one-sided. I felt my stomach roil as I remembered Mirella's screams, and glanced down at my arm, covered in a scab, about three square inches where he cut off part of my flesh.

I left the room, walking towards the cells with Nita following, and saw Kovit. "Hey." He said, he didn't sound angry, or upset, just... shocked. Hi." I said softly, and turned to see Nita in a corner, looking at the doorway. What is that girl thinking? I wondered, not for the first time. "Uh... Nita?" Kovit wondered aloud, and Nita walked over, acting like nothing happened. "Yes, Kovit?" She asked.

"Are you two staying the night?" He wondered, and I rolled my eyes. We didn't have much choice, what with the Death Market being the worst possible place to camp out. He gave us a creepy- no desperate smile as Nita didn't answer, and I could all but see the tension. "We don't have a choice, Nita, unless you wanna risk sleeping outside by Mercado de la Muerte." I said, and they looked at me. "Where's the dolphin wannabe?" Kovit asked, and I clenched my fists, hearing a crackling sound. "Uh, Jimena?" He asked, and I growled softly.  "If it's not too much trouble..." he began, and I smelled blood. Looking for the source, I saw Nita's hand clenched around the blades of the scissors she held, blood beginning to drip into the floor.

"Could you please feed me?" He finished, and I wondered if he meant food, or pain. The scissors fell to the ground, and I went to make food for all of us. "And, um, water too, if you don't mind." He said, and I nodded, leaving him and Nita alone. "There's bread in the fridge across from my bed!" He said, and I called over my shoulder. "Okay!" I returned fifteen minutes later to find Kovit, but no Nita. "Where's Nita?" I wondered, and Kovit shrugged.

"Wait, this thing's busted. Shit." He said, looking at Nita's feeder. I bit my lip and looked away. "Actually, I think she just stuck some stuff in it so it wouldn't open. Just pull it out and no problem." I said, and he pulled out plastic and paper. He got a slightly annoyed smile as he did so, and I out in a cuesadilla and a bottle of water. "She tore my cards." He said, and Nita came back; I stiffened at the sledgehammer in her pocket.

"You know there's a wall of glass between us." He said. "Is that all?" Nita asked. "Do you know when Reyes will be back?" I asked him, "Ahh, Reyes, I had almost forgotten about her for a second. How pleasant..." He said, and Nita got impatient. "What time, Kovit?" She asked. "Thay's a very particular question for someone you just hit in the head..." He said sitting on his knees. "But if you let me out of here, I might be able to find out." He said, and I bit my lip. I wanted to let him out, just a little bit, but he's probably torture us.

"No thanks." Nita said, dragging me away. "Wait!" Kovit called, and I paused, but Nita kept walking. "You're one of the only people I've spoken to in weeks." He said, and I sat opposite of him. "You don't actually think I came here by choice, do you? Please don't leave." He said, and I nodded. "I.... I won't." I said  remembering how he reached when Nita had a nightmare, and stayed with us. I looked at this person in front of me and wondered, why was he here? Zannies are prized by corrupt government, or anywhere torture was necessary, and can charge sky high rates, work anywhere. Why was he in this crappy, humid stuffy, smelly place?

Why are you here? A voice in my head wondered. "You didn't call me back here just to admire me?" I joked, smirking, and I got a smile, a faint one, but there. "So.... why are you here?" I asked, hearing Nita shuffle around in one of the other rooms. "Why does anyone get the shitty posts? By screwing up." He said, and I nodded. "Reyes isn't the type to give second chances." I said, not a question as I remembered the incident with unicorn bone. "No, she is not." He said.

"But the person I screwed up with, the person who wouldn't give me a second chance, it wasn't Reyes."
