Chapter 19

"Do you know what today is?" Angel whispered as they lay awake in the grungy motel room just outside of New York City at 5 am.

"What?" Jack asked.

"It's the 1 year anniversary of the day I found you in the snow." She claimed.

"Really?" Jack asked, thinking about the disorienting moment when he woke up without memories.

All he knew was that his name was Jack.

Then Angel found him and he knew that he was in love with her.

He couldn't help but think about why he ran out when she kissed him.

He worried for a long time that it was because he didn't love her.

But looking at her now, that couldn't be true.

It was because he knew Kent loved her too.

But Kent had been lost in this mess.

He had been broken.

Jack couldn't help but feel sad that Kent had died not as the happy kid who liked to climb trees, but as the angry boy who didn't get the girl.

Angel didn't like to talk about Kent.

Or Julian.

Jack wished he knew where Julian ended up. He worried that he was out there somewhere, searching for his brother.

His brother who had died in Angel's flames.

Sometimes Jack wished that things were back to they way they were.

But if things were still like that, he wouldn't have April, Margaret, Theo, Amber and Lance in his life.

He wouldn't know about his ice powers. He wouldn't remember his mother. Angel wouldn't have blossomed into such a bad ass.

So no, his life was far from perfect and times were hard.

But he wouldn't change a thing.

"Happy anniversary." He replied in a whisper.

"I'm going to kill my father today." She stated tiredly.

"You don't have to. We can just capture him." Jack suggested.

"No. Jack he's starting a war. There was a note in my bedroom at Namour..." She admitted. Jack's eyes widened. He remembered the Polaroid he had found in his room.

"He's going to attack Namour. He's building an army." She said, her voice shaking.

"The people dressed in black..." Jack realized.

"I'm sorry. I should've told you. But I didn't want to scare anyone." She cried. Jack put a hand on her face.

"Shh. It's okay." He assured.

A war.

This was bigger than Jack could've imagined.

"I'm sorry." Angel repeated. He could feel tears against his hand.

"We're gonna be alright." Jack assured, pulling his arm around her and kissing her forehead.

They managed to get some sleep and then they hit the city.

New York City was beautiful. Jack took a few Polaroid pictures from the window of the van.

As they neared the warehouse, Jack felt his stomach turn.
