Shane couldn't stop smiling throughout the entire filming process. Half of it was knowing who the real killer was and pretending not to, and the other half was how entertaining it was to hear Ryan's storytelling voice. It was amusing just how serious his voice could get, then immediately change back to his normal squeaky tone. Shane leaned in while listening to the story of the Sodder children, most of Ryan's words going in one ear and out the other, but he caught a few plot points to make jokes. They even had to stop and refilm parts because the crew would start laughing along.
It was much easier to keep up the repour as the story continued. Shane didn't know he was interested in true crime, not until he heard Ryan talk about it.
"You did pretty good out there for a first-timer" Ryan's backhanded compliment thinly veiled his true excitement. In truth, he was positively esthetic. Obviously, he would never admit this to Shane, his pride wouldn't allow it.
"Oh did I now?" Shane returned with a knowing smile. They got up from the wooden desk and started to walk down the hallway. All they had to do today was film, so they planned on going out to celebrate. Since Ryan hadn't been living in the area very long this would be a first for him too.
"You still have a looong way to go, big guy" Ryan added on quickly, trying to recant his statement. He refused to let Shane have the satisfaction. They rounded the corner and started for the parking lot, Shane getting slightly ahead of Ryan.
"Big guy? I'm already getting nicknames!" Shane said triumphantly. "Now I wonder what the fans will call me..." He wondered out loud as they got into Ryan's car. Ryan felt his face flush with embarrassment, which only fueled his need to argue back.
"Fans? You think you're getting fans?" Ryan forced out a laugh to exaggerate his point. Game on, Madaj.
"Well of course I will, look at this devilishly handsome mug" Shane remarked, gesturing to his face. Ryan simply replied with an eye roll as he typed the address to the bar into his GPS. He wasn't sure if the eye roll was for the pun, or his narcissistic comment.
They drove down the highway, laughing with each other. It was surprising how quickly they had already developed inside jokes. For the first time since he moved here, Ryan felt that he had made a genuine connection, one he felt comfortable with. It was out of character for Ryan not only to let a demon live with him, but actually befriend him.
As their conversation continued, Ryan noticed Shane's growing interest in history. It wasn't something Ryan ever considered could interest a demon, but he also didn't see why not. It was pretty adorable how passionately he talked about random historical events. Not adorable, Ryan corrected himself. It was... just something that was happening.
"Have you heard of the history channel?" was one of Ryan's favorite things that Shane said. Ryan sometimes pretended he hadn't heard the stories before, just to hear him continue. But that was just because he was interested in how peanut butter was invented, obviously.
They arrived at the bar, a neon pink sign hanging above the dingy door. It didn't look like the most high end place, but it had a certain charm to it.
