Why Him?

Shane woke up but didn't open his eyes just yet, the pain from yesterday immediately attacking his body. He took a sharp breath in and tried to get up, but something was holding him down. He reluctantly opened his eyes to be greeted with a sleeping Ryan holding onto his arm.

The scene sent shivers down his spine as he looked at his sleeping face he looked so... heavenly. The morning light was hitting his face perfectly to highlight his most handsome features. This alluring moment only made Shane's heart ache.

His promise to Ricky, all the danger he had put Ryan in, the panic attack. All the evidence was begging for Shane to go home. He held Ryan closer, taking comfort in his warmth. All he wanted to do was stay with him for eternity. Nothing else mattered anymore. He had never fallen for someone so fast and so hard before. Well really, he had never fallen for anyone.

He thought if he held onto Ryan right now, they would never be separated. Shane closed his eyes again, but couldn't go back to sleep. Instead, he sat in silent contemplation and waited for Ryan to wake up. Shane knew he couldn't leave just yet, he couldn't take it. At the very least needed some type of closure before returning to hell.

The guy Ricky called to help would go up to the human world in 2 days to get Shane, which was already proving to be too long. He bounced his leg anxiously as he stared at the mirror. The only portal they had was to the living room, which he expected Shane to be sleeping. But last night he never came in.

He threw the mirror across the room and watched it shatter. He had stood by Shane for his entire life, but the second a human he likes steps into the picture he leaves. All the loyalty he had poured into their relationship over the years apparently meant nothing. What was so special about this human anyway?!

Still seething with anger and betrayal, he stormed out of the house and slammed the door behind him. He was going to get to the bottom of this infatuation Shane was feeling. The first step was to do some research on this human to see what it is about him that made Shane want to stay. Ricky knew that Shane understood how dangerous the human world was, but that human had something about him that made the risk worth it.

He walked into the central library which contained all the information on every human soul. He made a beeline for the librarian and slammed his fist onto the desk. She would've yelled at him, but no one else was in the library. Instead, she glared up at him, obviously not amused but his aggression.

"What do you want?" She asked, doing her best to put on her customer service voice. there weren't too many demons who came into the library. It was much more common to see condemned human souls looking to see their own book.

"I need a book about a living human" He said quickly, wanting to get in and get out. He glanced down at her nametag, -Sara- was written in cursive.

"I'm gonna need to know more than that" She said, turning to her computer and beginning to search. she had seen Goldsworth around hell before, always with that other, taller demon attached to his hip. oddly enough he was alone this time. mist of what she knew about Ricky had come from other demons.

"His name's Ryan Bergara" Ricky added, hating that he knew that.

"There are two, do you want the one from the Philippines or California?" she asked, looking up from her glasses. She refrained from asking questions, mostly because it was policy not to, but she was curious as to why he would want to know about a random human. even more so she wanted to know where that other demon had gone.

"California" Ricky said, his impatience growing every second. She told him the section he would find it, then Sara went back to reading her book. He basically ran to the section and started skimming through the rows. He reached for the book with Ryan's name inscribed on the spine and flipped through the pages. The first few chapters were about unimportant information and statistics. Finally, he got to the good parts.

There were a few chapters on his childhood that were for the most part uneventful. He fell into a pile of bricks as a kid, but other than that nothing of note was in there. He did keep note that he had a recurring nightmare as a child that an evil dentist stared at him from outside his window, Ricky thought he could use this in the future. Beyond that, it went into greater detail about his family. That's where Ricky found some interesting facts. His brother, Jake, was apparently on a reality show. he wondered why he hadn't heard of that before.

He thumbed through the remaining pages and got the criminal record section. He wasn't sure what to expect, but he was shocked at how long it was. The infringements were all along the lines of breaking an entering. It made sense since he was an amateur ghost hunter.

Ricky's not-so-secret ulterior motive was to find something in Ryan's past that Shane would leave him for. But nothing was to be found. in fact, after reading this, Ricky could see how Shane would have some more respect for Ryan.

he sat on at one of the desks in the library and reconsidered his stance on the whole situation. What if this was just a passing fancy masquerading as actual interest? Surely Shane would come back first thing tomorrow with a wild story and an apology.

Ricky wanted so desperately for his theory to be right. He didn't know what he would do if Shane actually fell in love.

"Good morning" Ryan whispered as soon as he opened his eye. He wasn't expecting Shane to be right there, but he wasn't complaining. It was a nice way to wake up. Ryan slowly started to piece together the events of yesterday as his eyes adjusted to the light.

"Morning" Shane's deep morning voice sent chills down Ryan's spine. He realized he was holding onto Shane's arm, so he slowly let go, trying not to make it obvious. He sat up and stretched his arms out, feeling much after than he did yesterday. It always took a while in the morning for Ryan to get his mind started, so he went over what happened.

Shane got out of bed with a heavy sigh as he tried to downplay the wave of pain that washed over him. The gash was the worst of it, but being slammed into the wall certainly didn't feel great. Ryan took note of the bruises on Shane's back and down his arms, from where the other demon had grabbed him. He moved slowly and despite trying his best not to give away how sore he was, he could barely move.

He was still tired and groggy but kept his wits about him. He had no way of knowing when the next attack would be.

The energy between them wasn't awkward but still tense. Neither of them knew what the other was going to do. The kiss was the main subject that was on Shane's mind because he wanted to know if it meant anything. It didn't seem like Ryan hated him mostly because they slept in the same bed last night. On the other hand, Ryan was just a good person. He knew Shane was injured so of course he would let him sleep in his bed just for tonight.
