They were back in the middle of the party. It wasn't great, but Ryan much preferred the giant crowd over feeling trapped in an office with Ricky. Shane twirled his necklace absent-mindedly as they pushed their way past all the people asking the same questions repetitively.
"There you are! Finally!" Mari exclaimed, grabbing Shane's arm. "You owe me a fight, Madej"
Shane groaned and Ryan looked up at him with worried eyes. "Alright, fine. Let's get this over with"
"Yes!" Mari yelled, clasping her hands together. "Everybody, make room!" she began ordering people around so there was a sizable open area in the middle of the room. Ryan felt his heart beating faster and faster as the fight quickly approached. He hated that Shane had to do this.
"Stay here" Shane sighed before kissing Ryan's cheek. He handed him his jacket and rolled his shoulders as he transformed into his demon form. Ryan watched wordlessly, he had gotten used to seeing this. The crowd cheered. They made it clear earlier that they didn't like Shane being in his human form all the time.
Shane was a bit nervous about leaving Ryan alone again, so he made a promise to make the fight quick. Mari was pacing around, overflowing with excitement. All the people watching them made it all the more exhilarating. This was her chance to prove to everyone that she wasn't just an assassin, she was the best.
"Come on, Shane" Mari taunted, flipping a blade in her hand. "You scared?"
Shane scoffed, he couldn't deny that the battle would be a little fun. "Sure, if that's what you need to believe"
She laughed and approached Shane until they were standing just inches apart.
"Ready?" A voice called out, sending a spike of adrenaline down both of their spines.
"Set..." Maris grip tightened around the blade as she smiled widely.
"Go!" Ryan watched with his heart in his throat as Shane made the first move. He tried to sweep her feet out from under her, but she jumped just in time. Mari had a smug grin on her face as she landed smoothly and one movement raised her blade.
She wasn't fast enough though because Shane was able to catch her hand before she could even get close. His expression was blank as he ripped the blade from her hand and threw it into the crowd. Ryan watched a bystander catch it and hold it close to their chest while cheering like it was a rock concert.
Ryan winced as Mari threw a forceful punch at Shane, catching him in the jaw. The sight was so jarring Ryan didn't even notice when someone came up behind him and placed their hand on his shoulder.
"God, I just hate these parties," A gentle voice said. Ryan turned to look at the person and was greeted with a beautiful woman. She had long blonde hair that bordered her sharp face and contrasted nicely with her brown eyes. She was tall, but only because of her black heels which matched her dress.
Ryan laughed politely but his gaze was fixated on the fight. It seemed like Shane was gaining the advantage again as he twisted Mari's arm back.
"I'm Gina," She said, ignoring the fight and keeping her gaze on Ryan.
"Ryan" He responded, not really paying attention to the conversation. Mari ripped herself free from Shane's grasp and was looking around frantically for a weapon to get. While she was distracted, Shane was able to surprise her by hitting her with his wing.
She laughed. "You sure are interested in that fight, huh?"
Ryan nodded. "Yeah" Shane's attack didn't do nearly enough damage, because Mari was able to recover extremely quickly.
