They sat in their office, Shane stared pensively at the portal and Ricky paced around the room. Shane sighed as he watched him, feeling guilty about sharing the secret. Ricky could've lived a blissful life without ever knowing what happened with Lady Trix. Regret wasn't the right word to describe the feeling, but something close to it. It had to be said, but it sucked that he was taking it the wrong way.
"Here, I want you to sign this" Shane said, rifling through his desk and producing a paper.
Ricky refused to stop pacing and muttering under his breath, so Shane continued. "It'll give you full control over Bite and Bark as well as all my assets"
"What the hell are you talking about? Why would I want the company? We're going to leave this place together because I'm not staying here without you" Ricky retorted with an annoyed tone. "But that's not what we're talking about right now"
"I don't have anything else to say about Trix" Shane huffed, pushing the papers into Ricky's chest. He knew sharing that story would be a bad idea.
"I didn't even know" Ricky sounded betrayed.
"I didn't want you to" Shane whispered, looking just past Ricky. He was stuck in the memory of that night. "Sign the paper"
"Why? I don't want Bite and Bark" Ricky argued back. Why was Shane being so pushy about this?
"Because I'm leaving" Shane admitted with a grimace.
The air was silent for a moment as the weight of Shane's words hung in the air.
"Leaving?! Where?!" Ricky asked, tossing the papers to the side. That was the absolute last thing on his mind. Not again.
"The overworld," Shane said, staring at the clock as he counted down the time he had left. He thought it was obvious. Where else would he go? There was nothing left for him in Hell. At least he could hope in the overworld.
"Why the hell would you do that?" Ricky was begging for an answer. Tears streaked his cheeks as pain and betrayal took hold of his chest. "I don't understand"
Shane wrapped his arms around Ricky. He had no idea how to even begin the explanation. "I need to"
"He left you, Shane" Ricky hissed into his chest as he clung to Shane with everything he had. "I'm still here, how can you choose him? Even now"
"Because I'm not choosing him, Ricky" Shane sighed, looking at the ceiling again. "I'm choosing myself"
"You're not making any sense" Ricky wanted to scream as loud as he could. Nothing made sense. He did everything right. He did everything he could possibly do. Why was this still happening?
"Hell just isn't for me. I need to find myself, and the only place I've ever felt at home is in the overworld. I stayed there because of Ryan, but I'm going back for myself" Shane tried to make it make sense, but even to himself it sounded all over the place.
"So you're not going to go back to him..?" Ricky asked after a few moments of just listening to Shane's rapid heartbeat.
Shane laughed quietly. "I never said that. I'm going to do everything I can to get him back, but that's not the reason I'm going to live in the overworld"
Ricky broke away from the embrace slightly and looked up at Shane with hurt eyes. "Why was I never enough for you?"
"You were- you are... but just" Shane stuttered through an explanation. He had to get everything off his chest now, or he never would. "We're different people now, and that's ok. You were what i needed growing up and I'm the person I am today because of you. You're so important to me, and you always will be. We're going to go in different directions and lives separate from each other-"
