17 - Amelia

I couldn't believe it when I saw the video. Lauren was an angel student, she would never steal anything. So something was definitely up and I needed to find out what it was.

"Tell me what's up", I said. "I won't judge. I promise."

Lauren took a deep breath and sat on her bed. "Okay. I received this notebook in my locker a while ago after dance practice. It had tasks for me to do. For me to fit in on the team and in school."

"Seriously? Where is it? That's crazy!" I exclaimed, looking around her room.

She nodded. "Yeah and it's always some girl named Kiki Clarkson who signs the letters. But I'm starting to think there isn't a Kiki at school. It's all so confusing."

I crossed my arms. "There's no Kiki Clarkson. Someone's using a fake name. Did they... tell you to take Gabe's bat?"

"Yeah," she answered. "Then they said to return it so people would notice me."

"People already notice you. You're a McCallister," I scoffed.

"Exactly," she jumped up. "I'm a McCallister or whatever. That's what you always say. But I don't want to be someone who follows your shadow. I want to be my own person and this Kiki girl told me they could help."

"You listened to a make-believe girl you don't even know?" I asked in disbelief.

She walked over to her drawer and took out a huge notebook, then passed it to me. I took a look inside and read the messages in them.

"Seriously? They're using you. What do you mean they were kicked off the dance team? Nobody is supposed to get kicked unless they leave the school or do something really bad," I said.

"Yeah, well, she said she made a mistake," Lauren told me, pointing out the sentence.

I slammed the book shut. "You're not doing the next task. No way."

"Oh, I forgot, they gave me an envelope during the baseball game today. I didn't catch the person though."

"That's so sneaky. Who on earth would be doing this?" I whispered. "One thing for sure. They're definitely not trying to help you."
