"Laur! The tryouts are tomorrow." Esme told me while we walked to Science class.
"Oh, really? Do we have to sign up?" I asked her.
Esme thought about it, as we entered the classroom.
"I'm not sure. Dance is a really popular club so maybe."
A pretty petite brunette girl walked up to us with her arms crossed. I had never really talked to this girl but I had always thought she seemed nice and was pretty innocent.
"Of course you have to sign up for dance. Shouldn't you know by now?" she stated.
Esme looked her up and down. I could tell she was silently judging her.
I smiled, "Oh, well thanks for letting us know."
The girl let out a single laugh. "If you haven't been on the team for the last couple years, do you really think you'll have a chance when you try out?"
Esme stepped forward. "Who do you think you are to say that?"
I grabbed Esme's arm, tugging her back.
"I'm Livi. The dance team assistant captain. Watch yourself. Dance club isn't completely about skill, it's about who you know."
"Everyone who tries out has a chance. If you've already decided who's going to be on the team, why do you need tryouts?" I retorted.
What was I doing?
My brain silently told myself to stop talking but I didn't cooperate. "I hope you'll be fair to everyone who had the courage to do so."
Livi blinked. With a quick scoff, she walked back to her friends.
Esme squeezed my hand. "Go you," she whispered, just quiet enough for the two of us to hear.
I was happy about standing up for Esme and I, but did I just start a war with an important member of the dance team?
