"Hey hey hey!" Connor waved to Noah and I after school. He ran up to us and grinned. "Where are you guys going?"
Noah frowned. "Do you need to know?"
Connor blinked at him, then at me. "Amelia, can I come along?"
I paused. Yes, yes, yes. I wanted him to but... "No, um, it's a two person thing. Sorry." I looked away from him and headed off quickly. I heard Noah mumble something to Connor, then he followed behind me.
"You did the right thing" was the only thing he said to me before walking alongside me silently. We were actually headed to Shakelicious. Noah wanted to show me a new shake he had created.
My phone buzzed and I took it out to see a text from Connor: Hey, did I do something wrong? Is everything okay?
How could I tell him I was jealous of his Spanish lessons with Esme? I hurriedly shoved my phone deeper into my pocket and marched all the way to the milkshake shop.
Ten minutes later, Noah had made a huge strawberry milkshake with cheesecake crumbs and oreo bits. I tasted it and smiled.
"It's really good, Noah. You might have successfully mastered a perfect milkshake for me."
"Thank you." he bowed, beaming. "I tend to please."
A beat of silence.
"Hey, listen. That day at the movie, you told me... you liked me? I think I should give you an answer."
"No no, there's no rush. Whenever you're ready to tell me you like me too, do it. I'll wait," he said, hurriedly disappearing into the back of the shop.
Sigh.
