"The last novel we'll be covering this school year is on your desks. Please write your names on the list that's inside," my English teacher instructed. I looked at the book in front of me. A horse was on the cover. Well, this will be nice. I love reading about animals.
I flipped open the book and scanned the list of students from former years that had written their names. One in particular caught my eye, as I gasped out loud.
Kiki Clarkson
There it was. Plain as day. But not only was her name there, on the last page of the book. There was a note, and you wouldn't believe what it said.
Hi Lauren,
Nice try. Again.
But I'm not Emmie Salazar either. I'm someone else entirely. You'll realize soon enough. Start with your step-sister. Ask her who Camille Vanderscoff is. Then you can start figuring it out. I believe in you. Lauren, you got this. Time for you to shine.

The minute I saw Amelia in the hallway, I grabbed her aside.
"Amelia, Amelia."
"What?" she questioned, as a confused look formed on her face.
I looked her in the eye. "Who's Camille Vanderscoff?"
She froze and didn't blink for a long, long time.
I waved my hand in front of her face. "Hello? You there?"
"She's nobody. Nobody," she answered, avoiding my eyes.
With that, she pushed past me, disappearing into the crowd of students.
And my question was left unanswered.
