"I'm sacred, Lucas," Marcus asked, grabbing his hand and pulling him back."I don't want to see my mommy like that." He added
"Listen, I'm scared too. I have no idea what we're about to see or hear. Your mother is a strong woman." He said, leaning down to his level
"What if"
"Marcus, I got you. It's going to be okay,"
They walked into the hospital, "you'll sit right here. I'll come to get you as soon as I get information about mom," Lucas said, putting Mackenzie beside Marcus. "Watch her; I'll be right back. Do not move," he added.
"Can I help you?" the lady asked.
"Hello, I'm looking for Leah Harris; she came by ambulance."
"Who are you to the patient?" The lady asked, smacking her gum,
"I'm her boyfriend," he said, tapping his thumb on the counter,
"She's currently in surgery, I will inform you when she's out, but right now, you can just have a seat in the waiting room."
"Ma'am, she's pregnant." He said, mugging her
"Sir, I understand, but there is absolutely nothing I can do; she's in surgery. I will inform you when she gets out, sir,"
Lucas mugged her and walked back over to the kids, "How is she?" Marcus asked, running up to him.
"She's in surgery; we won't know anything until she gets out," he said, sitting down and putting his hands on his head.
"Dada," Mackenzie said, trying to pull his arms down,
"What's wrong, mama?" he asked, picking her up and pacing her on his lap. He looked over at Marcus and put his arm around him. "She's going to be okay, kiddo; remember, your mom is strong,"
Marcus nodded his head and stared out into the hospital hallway.
"You know, the last time my dad did something like this, I thought that was my last seeing her," Marcus said, holding Mackenzie's hand. "I don't want Mackenzie to grow up the way I did; She doesn't deserve it," he said, tearing up.
"I know, man; I know," Lucas said, rubbing his head. "I'm going to try my hardest to make sure you, mack, and the new baby don't have to go through this anymore."
"Uh, Lucas?" The doctor asked, searching the waiting room.
"Yes!" he jumped up, holding Mackenzie.
"So Leah is doing fine; he missed all her prominent veins; she didn't lose a lot of blood. She's in recovery now; you'll be able to see her shorty."
Marcus grabbed Lucas's arm and held it tight, and started crying. Finally, he let out a relieved sigh and hugged Lucas.
"She's okay, Marcus; I told you your mom is powerful; she wasn't leaving us like that." He said, hugging Marcus tight. "But wait, what about my baby?" he asked, worried.
"The baby is fine; no stab wounds to the stomach; he stabbed her in the same arm, just in different spots; she'll have to wear an arm brace for at least four weeks. "I'll send a nurse out shortly for you to see her."
"Okay, thank you so much, sir," Lucas said, crying. "She's going to be okay, guys," He said, picking them up and holding them. Marcus laughed, and Mackenzie stared with a confused look on her face.
They sat down and waited for the nurse to call Lucas's name. Lucas sat there and prayed to God, hoping nothing would come up and cause bodily harm to Leah. He couldn't believe Leah got hurt again after he swore he would do everything in his power to protect them. Lucas lowkey blamed himself; Lucas felt like something could've been done and prevented half of what happened. If he had listened to Leah, they would've been in a new state, in a new town, their new home, and their new warm beds. Instead, Lucas sat in silence, going over what happened to Leah in his head. He can't fathom that he could've lost his child and Leah.
"Lucas, she's ready." The nurse said.
Lucas picked up Mackenzie, held Marcus's hand, and made their way to Leah's room. "Listen, guys, before we go in, I don't know what we're about to see, but that's still mommy; she may look a little different, but that's okay, be gentle with her, okay?" Lucas said, giving them a pep talk.
Marcus nodded his head and looked down. They walked into the room, and Leah was looking at the ceiling. "Mommy!" Mackenzie said, fighting to get down from Lucas. "Mack, wait-"
"Hi baby," Leah said groggy "come here, Marcus," she said, reaching out for him. He stood in silence and slowly walked toward her, and he let a couple of tears fall and wrapped his arms around her.
"I'm okay, baby," Leah said, wiping his tears. "Just a little bruised up, and I have to wear my arm brace for a couple of weeks, so that means you have to be a big boy and help mommy, okay?"
Marcus nodded his head and hugged her. Leah looked at Lucas and started tearing up. "Hey, baby," she said, smiling at him. "Hey boo," he said, smiling at her, "baby, I'm so sorry-"
"It's not your fault, baby; it's not your fault," she said, reaching out to him. He walked over to her and kissed her, and held on to her tightly. "I'm so happy you and the baby are okay; I was so worried," he said, kissing her stomach. "I love you so much, baby; we can leave, go to Flordia for all I care, get our passports, and go to Jamacia. I don't care; as long as you all are safe, we can go."
"We don't have to run anymore, baby; he's dead. I heard the gun go off," she said, thrilled.
"But I should've listened to you; you wanted to leave. You knew what would happen, and I just put all that to the side and look at you now, baby."
"It's a fine baby, I promise you," Leah said, rubbing his back.
"Sorry to interrupt, Leah. Are you available to talk?" The nurse said, walking in.
"Yes?" she said, confused
"So your husband-"
"He's not my husband," Leah said, mugging
"Well, you on the emergency contact, so I just assumed-"
"Please just get to the point; he is not my husband," Leah said stern
"Okay, well, Michael is doing fine and is also in recovery; he is under police custody."
"Wait! he's not dead?" Leah said, sitting up. "I heard the gunshots; how isn't he dead?" she said, confused.
"He wasn't in any serious condition; they took the bullets out, and he is now doing fine."
"Why isn't he dead? Do you see me? He did this to me! I heard the gun go off; why isn't he dead, Lucas?" she said, starting to panic.
"Mrs.Harris, breathe," The nurse said, looking at her vitals
"He's going to get away with it; he's a fucking cop! He knows how to work the system," She said, crying. "We have to leave now. We can't be here anymore," she said, getting up
"Leah sit down," Lucas said, grabbing her hand
"He is alive and is going to kill me, Lucas! I'm not staying here," she cried out.
