tea leaves

The first class of the next day was divination.

Me and Valerie were sat at a table with a random Slytherin and Blaise, who hadn't left val's side in weeks.

"Right, today we are re-doing tea leaf readings as some people took it upon themselves to throw the leaves around the room last time."

Our professor sent piercing looks to some of the Ravenclaw boys at the back of the class.

Valerie downed the cup of green tea before placing the cup down in front of me.

"What does it say?" She smiled hopefully.

"Well, I think this bit here means that someone close to you is going to confess something to you," I pointed to a strange triangle shape on the left side of the cup.

"This bit means that you will feel love and affection more than ever on the next blue moon."

She looked at Blaise suggestively and turned back to me.

"Oh and this means that someone close to you is going to die but let's not focus on that bit."

She looked confused for a second then handed me a teapot.

I drank the tea reluctantly and gave her the cup.

"Ok, so this says that your soul will be spiritually connected with another's."

"That doesn't seem so bad." I smiled as she continued,

"This says that a dark secret will be revealed, and it also says that you'll be confused and angry a lot."

"So I'm going to connect with someone but be burdened with a potentially dangerous piece of information? Great."

Suddenly, a cup dropped and the sound of china breaking on a floor filled the room.

"This is why we can't do fun things. Right, you're all dismissed. I'm not angry, just disappointed."

We all walked out the room and went to sit outside.

It was warm but not too hot, just the right temperature.

Students were walking by as they changed classes, exchanging looks and whispers with their friends.

Across the grass Theo was sat with his friends.

He kept making intense eye contact with me and smirking when I held it too long.

"You ok Bella? You seem different."

Valerie laid her head in my lap and looked up at me.

"Where were you last night?"

"I was uh, in the library."

"We all know that's not true," Mattheo's voice came from above.

Valerie laughed "I knew it."

"If you knew why did you ask?"

"I wanted to hear you say it."

Valerie sat up again, turning to face me, and now Mattheo who was stood behind me.

"You two are such an unlikely match."

"I could say the same for you and Blaise." Theo said in response,

Valerie gasped "we should go on a double date."

"No"  me and Mattheo said in sync.

She sighed "boring."

She got up and walked away, as did me and Mattheo.

"I have to say Bella, you really surprised me last night."

"I surprised myself."

Mattheo smiled, "you should do surprises more often."

"You'd like that wouldn't you?"

"Indeed."

"Mattheo!" Someone shouted from behind.

"Mattheo? What are you doing with her again?"

Maya was back obsessing over Mattheo again and all I could do was watch.

"Maya, please go."

"You don't miss me?"

"No."

She tried making puppy dog eyes but ended up looking like she had been using crack for weeks.

"Look, it was fun while it lasted, but I'm moving on to better things now."

"I don't know that I'd say she's better but whatever."

She stormed off, giving me the finger as she left.

"She is a piece of work." I said, looking over my shoulder as her army of friends swarmed around her.

Mattheo nodded in agreement.

The bell rang and we parted ways to go to our next period.

                                      ———

Potions with Slughorn was always interesting, he always told weird stories about his past and a spider funeral.

I think he's lost the plot at this point but we all still love him.

"Today we are making felix feliceis. Otherwise known as?"

"Liquid luck, sir." Valerie blurted out.

"Correct."

"Whoever makes this correctly can have a vial for their own use, but please do be careful. Off you go."

Once we were at our stations, cauldrons started bubbling and books started to open.

"So, what exactly happened between you and Mattheo last night?" Val asked whilst cutting up an insect of some sort.

"I would tell you but I don't think Slughorn will approve."

"Forget him, I want to know."

"Well, we had a nice talk about the ministry of magic and past headmasters of Hogwarts."

"Fuck off."

"I think you are smart enough to figure out what happened."

"But I want details."

"A lady never tells..."

"Bella, you are so unladylike it's impressive, you can tell me."

"Miss Diggory and Miss Berkshire, please keep it down." Slughorn murmured from the other side of the room.

"Sorry sir."

We laughed under our breath and continued laughing every time we looked at each other for the rest of that lesson.

Neither of us made the potion well.

Some random girl called lavender made it first.

She got too excited and dropped it on the floor, then started crying and shouting about how the 'universe is against her'.

She got sent to the hospital wing.
