I can tell something isn't right as soon as I see my car. It sits alone across the road from the firm. I'd been helping Davina all day, mostly filing paperwork and talking about the new case she's taking on.

The hairs on my arm raise as I cautiously approach. It doesn't take me long to notice what's out of the ordinary.

Spray painted in bright red across my car is two simple, yet extremely unnerving words.

WE KNOW.

There are so many things that these two simple words could be alluding to.

My head moves rapidly from left to right. I search the faces of those passing by, search the people minding their own business across the road. My throat feels like it's closing in on me.

They'd been following me again. This really isn't over.

With shaky hands, I open the door and pull away into traffic, knowing exactly where I'm going.

"What are you—"

"We need to talk. Now."

Funny how I'd promised myself I'd never come back here.

I barge past Brax, stepping further into the house. The living room is empty, the unusual silence something I'm struggling to interpret.

"No one else is here," Brax informs me, reading my mind.

I cross my arms over my chest, slowly spinning around to face him. It's barely been a few days but it's like I'm seeing him all again for the first time. His dark hair, that one strand that never seems to be anywhere but hanging in front of his eyes. Those matching irises, so haunted yet faraway, like watching someone from a distance.

I furrow my brows, massaging at the crease that forms between them. "Did you see the state of my car?"

He leans back against the wall opposite me. We aren't far apart, but I suddenly feel the space between us.
