She was still asleep, she looked so peaceful. It was hard to look at her though, she was almost unrecognizable. I sat down beside her, holding her hand. "Hey Annie. It's Adam. I'm here with you, just like I said I would be that night you were panicking. I'll always be here, you can't get rid of me that easily." I looked over at her, she was still asleep. I started to cry again. "Why. Why did she have to ride him? Why wouldn't he just listen to her?" I said out loud to myself. I sat back in the chair, looking up at the ceiling. The under of my eyes were throbbing from the tears that constantly came down. "Stop crying. Just stop crying." I said under my breath.
I jumped up when I felt Annie squeeze my hand. I looked up and waited for her to awake. She didn't, but at least I knew she could hear me. "I love you Annie. I always will." I said to her, smiling through the tears.
I sat with her for a few hours whilst she was still asleep before a nurse came in. "Mr. Metzger, I'm sorry but you're going to have to leave now. You can come back from 9am tomorrow." I sighed, but at least I could see her today and again tomorrow morning. "I'll be out in a second." She nodded and walked out, closing the door. I turned back to Annie. "I've got to go now. Looks like we are going to have to get used to sleeping on our own for a bit." I wiped away a tear. "I'll be here before you wake up tomorrow, I love you Annie, goodnight." I said as I stood up, giving her one last look before I walked out. I immediately started crying again once I had left the room. I called Ryan and asked them if they could pick me up. "We will be right there." He answered. I put the phone down and waited for them outside.
When they arrived, Ryan had told me he had drove my car home for me earlier. I thanked him and turned to Jack. "How is she?" he asked. "She's all bruised. She has a broken arm and both her legs and a knee are broken too." I replied. "I'm so sorry you had to see her like that Adam." Ryan placed a hand on my back. "You guys can come see her tomorrow morning if you want." I said forcing a smile. "We'd love to." Jack said smiling back.
That night I stayed over at Jack and Ryan's, I couldn't face being in the apartment alone. That night I didn't get any sleep, I was constantly turning over, remembering Annie in the condition she was in. Flashbacks of watching her fall, seeing her in the ambulance. It was just to much. I woke up at 8 am, I got Jack and Ryan up and we headed to the hospital. We arrived at 8:50am and went straight to her room. I opened the door and saw that she was still sleeping. I sat on the chair on the left side of her, Jack and Ryan on the right side. "Hey." I lightly said to her, holding her hand. "I'm here, just like I said I would be." I smiled at her. "We are here too Annie. Ready for when you decide to wake up." Ryan said, smiling at her. Jack chuckled and said "Yeah, I bet this is the longest sleep of your life." We laughed at what Jack had said and did small talk before Ryan got up and went to get us breakfast. When he had left the room, Jack turned to me. "Are you okay?" He asked. "Yeah I'm fine." I lied. "Adam really. I know i'm not serious often, but I am now." He said, leaning forward. "Well no I'm not. I can't believe I let this happen. If I just told her not to ride him she wouldn't be here now. She'd be at home, having a good time like usual. She'd be okay." I started to tear up. "Adam none of this is your fault. She's a jockey, this happens." He comforted me. "I know, I know." I replied. "She's going to be okay." Jack said. "Everything will be okay." He said just as Ryan entered the room. "Got you a Fanta Jack. Give you a bit of a sugar rush to make Annie laugh when she wakes up." Ryan smiled. He passed me my cheese toastie and my hot chocolate. "Thanks Ryan." "No problem." He smiled at me, sitting down. A few more hours past and a nurse told us to go stretch our legs whilst she checks on Anne. We walked outside and called Isobel. "How is she?" She asked. "She's still sleeping, but other than that she's okay." Ryan said. "Has she broken anything?" "Yeah, both her legs, her left knee and left arm." I answered. "Jesus. Are you alright Adam?" She asked. "Yeah, I'll be better when she wakes up though." I chuckled, tearing up again. "She'll wake up soon. Never was one for having a lie in." she said, making us all laugh. "Tell me about it." I answered. "Alright well i've got to go, my boss is going to have my neck if he catches me on the phone again. I'll call later." she said. "Okay bye." we all said through the phone.
She ended the call and we made our way back inside, Annie was still asleep. We sat in the hospital room for a few more hours playing card games before we heard Annie's voice.
