''How're things with you and Newt?'' Thomas asked.

Zara smiled and darted her eyes to the ground. ''Pretty good, pretty good.''

''You've been together for five months now, right?''

Zara snickered. ''And two days.'' She added.

She and Thomas were standing next to each other, facing the sea and the beach in front of them. Thomas was eating an apple. Zara had her arms folded. Her skin was tanned, cheeks a bit red. Her blonde, wavy hair fell over her shoulders and reached to the middle of her back. A gentle breeze every now and then made her locks flutter a bit, bringing along the familiar smell of the sea. It was warm. She wore light blue shorts and a brown camisole. And as a result, that some scars were showing. One on her leg, from when she was shot. One on her shoulder, also from being shot. And one she couldn't see herself unless she looked into her reflection of the water; two scratches on her cheek, from Newt when he was a Crank. It were some... keepsakes... that's what she called it.

But the weather was nothing compared to the Scorch, though.

Even after those five months of their new lives there, certain things still haunted Zara. Not like before. Not as bad as a trauma either, but sometimes it just hit her. And that was a problem everyone had. Some more than others. But in those five months, they'd managed to build a home together. It had become one big unit. Zara and Newt were both seconds-in-command, but Newt spend most of his time in the gardens or cleaning the camp. He wouldn't admit the fact that he had to rest sometimes. When Zara would tell him to sit down, he would straight up walk the other way. But he was doing pretty good. Max even got him something for his leg, which reduced the pain a bit.

''Do you ever... you know... regret it?'' Thomas turned to look at her.

Zara looked at him. ''Of my father?''

He nodded.

Zara kept her gaze at him for a few seconds, then returned her look at the sea.

''No.'' She paused. ''I used to, but he would have never been able to become a normal person again. A good person.'' She revealed.

Thomas listened carefully, noticing she had some difficulties talking about it.

She continued. ''You know, I used to think all people had a good side, that everyone could become a better person again. But I learned that that's only possible if that person wants it themselves. And do you think my father would have ever wanted to become a better person again?''

Thomas gazed ahead and shook his head. ''No.''

Zara nodded. ''I don't think so too. I had to choose. You guys, or him. And I'm telling you, I didn't hesitate for a moment.''

Thomas glanced up; a little smile curved into his lips.

After a little while, Zara nudged Thomas' arm and smiled. ''And what about you and Teresa?''

''What do you mean?'' Thomas laughed.

Zara snickered. ''How are you two doing? As a couple for five months?''

A big smile grew on Thomas' face. ''Amazing. We should go on a double date with you and Newt or something.''

Zara burst out laughing. ''We definitely should, what's the plan?''

''Eating pizza and watching the sunset on the beach.''

''Deal.''
