To say that Christmas in the Verstappen household was awkward was an extreme understatement. Victoria had been giving her parents the cold shoulder for so long that this was the first time that they had met their month old grandson. Max had also been keeping his parents at arms length, but eventually he'd have to have a proper conversation with them, considering the gifts he'd gotten for them.
The situation was made more tense by the fact that Jos and Sophie had invited the Pique's and Sanlik's to their Christmas party two nights ago. Max had stuck with his other family friends and did all he could to avoid his two exes. He was snapped out of his reflective thoughts by Bluejaye squealing that it was finally time to open the presents. The poor child had been beginning her mother, Kelly, to open the gifts the whole day. But finally after lunch the Verstappen clan exchanged gifts.
When it was Max's turn he'd pulled his parents to the side and handed them the gifts he and Zara had chosen.
"Ok Max we get it Vicky gave you a pregnancy announcement box and we didn't get one. Where is the real gift?"
Sophie joked. A part of her knew what Max actually meant by the gift but knowing what would happen, she ignored that and prayed he was just joking.
" I'm not playing mom. It turns out Zara isn't as infertile as dad thought. Baby Wolff-Verstappen will be here in May. Hopefully by then you guys will learn to respect and accept my relationship and girlfriend. Otherwise you can forget ever meeting your grandchild."
With that he left his parents and joined his cousins who were playing ping pong on the other side of the room." Jos. Say something dammit. "
Sophie rarely saw her ex-husband speechless, today happened to be one of those days."I'm shocked. So that means when we went to dinner with her, she was already..."
The due looked at each other as they realized that Zara had been pregnant at the time."Do you think she knew back then? Is that why they wanted to go public?" Jos' mind was whirling with conspiracies but Sophie quickly shut them down, finally coming to Zara's defense.
"Stop. I know what you're thinking. Do you really think that Max would allow you to speak to her like that if they'd known back then? And besides she had wine at dinner that day, she probably didn't know until she went to hospital a few days later."
"She was in hospital!?"
Although Jos had kept an impassive facade throughout the break up incident, despite the minor tantrums Max had thrown, the guilt had been eating at him. He'd seen his son return to his withdrawn and emotionless state over the weeks. And he honestly didn't like it because despite popular belief, he only wanted to see his son happy.
