The stone and wood architecture rose three stories up with no more than four meters of boulders between each of them. Shops for dresses, masks, and jewelry of any extravagance were found on every corner. Small restaurants boasted beautiful, exotic smells and loud conversation in every store across the street. It was such an ambush on her senses that it left Lisa disoriented as she walked a little behind Jennie, trying to enjoy all of Venice at the same time.
"Where are we?" Lisa asks absently, her eyes moving from a lace window to a vine that followed the crack in the stone wall of a house to her left. Her eyes followed her up the wall, trying to see where it was taking her, the sun too bright and blinding her vision.
"I do not know." Jennie replied, turning to meet Lisa's gaze with a cheeky smile, before turning back around.
"What do you mean you don't know?" The blonde questioned, putting her sunglasses on her face and running to catch up. Two women, who looked like they'd just come out of a Vogue photo shoot, bumped into them dressed in Versace and Prada fur coats, causing Lisa to stagger.
We are definitely not in Thailand anymore.
"I mean, we are lost, with no direction or destination." She said smiling. "But that's the beauty of Venice. You may have no idea where you are, but you may still be exactly where you need to be."
"That doesn't make any sense." Lisa complained, but still followed Jennie as she turned left and began walking down an alley full of flowers of every color on top of iron countertops. "I've been following you for the past two hours through narrow streets over bridges and canals."
"Uh-huh." Jennie muttered softly, coming to a sudden stop, Lisa bumping into her back. "Only when you are really lost will you find the best Venice has to offer." Lisa was so distracted by the fact that her body fit perfectly against Jennie's that she was still blushing when the shorter girl swiveled to meet her eyes. She blinked and waved to a store to her right. "Come on."
Lisa was bumped into colors of all spectrums as soon as she walked through the door. The store was still another ten meters ahead and the entire surface was covered with the most beautiful masks she had ever seen. They were on all beams, walls and shelves.
"Wow." She exclaimed in astonishment.
"I know."
Lisa ran her fingers under a red and black mask with a long nose on a display shelf. A gold filigree was around the eyes, the sanded surface smooth to the touch. She picked it up carefully and placed it on her face, admiring her reflection in a small mirror hanging on one of the wooden shelves.
"Medico Della Peste."
"Which?" Lisa spun at the sound of Jennie's voice, the mask still on her face. Her eyes met with a green and ivory mask, and eyes with silver accents and gold threads.
"Uhm, what did you say?" Lisa stuttered, losing her train of thought. The green silk of the delicate mask made Jennie's eyes sparkle behind the material that covered only her cheekbones and slender nose.
Beautiful.
"The Plague Doctor's Mask." Jennie explained. She turned Lisa towards the mirror as she spoke. "They used it in hopes of not getting the disease when they were caring for the victims."
"You're like a walking Google." Lisa commented, fully aware of the older girl's hands resting gently on her shoulders as they looked at each other in the mirror. "How do you know all this?"
"I just like to read." she said, lowering her hands and taking the mask to return it to the shelf. Lisa raised an eyebrow at the abrupt way Jennie dropped the subject, but she chose not to say anything, returning her own mask to the shelf.
