Lisa brought her Jack and Coke to her lips and took a generous sip, welcoming the faint burn off whiskey that spread through her throat and warmed her stomach. Her mind cleared for a moment as she took a deep breath and stirred the ice cubes in her glass. A lively song played through the speakers and the alcohol coursed through her body, but the two only served as a distraction from the girl sitting ten feet away, his arm around her waist.
Running a hand through her hair, she propped herself up on her elbows as people walked past her, all trying to be heard over the music.
The brunette was sitting next to Nayeon in a booth while reporters from radio stations and various websites sat with them, asking questions. The white designer dress Jennie was wearing made her feline eyes sparkle in the middle of the place. Even from across the room, Lisa could see that smile every time she talked about the world and her writing; it was her favorite thing about her. It lit up her whole face, so much so that other people couldn't help but stand paralyzed, unable to look away.
But in a few moments, Jennie would approach Jongin, a very different smile appearing on her lips; a smile that made Lisa squeeze the glass in her hand tighter as she watched from the bar. A stranger would admire them and say that they were a happy couple, that the smile on their faces was one of happiness and love.
But Lisa knew better.
It was one that was lifeless and could not reach her eyes. It was one that she had carried for the past two weeks, since they had come back into each other's lives, and since she had shown up at the studio. A knot was formed in Lisa's throat, knowing that all she could do was watch from afar, the girl she loved pretending to love someone else.
"All you do is stare at her?"
The playful voice on her right cut through the music and took her concentration away from the couple. Lisa sighed and turned towards Jisoo who was already watching her, a small smile on her lips. Lisa propped her chin on her hand and raised both eyebrows, looking at the girl before laughing and rolling her eyes.
"You know what I mean." She said, leaning back against the counter, smiling at the people passing by.
"This is fun for you, isn't it?" Lisa said, looking back at Jennie. "Seeing me in your place?."
Seeing me want something so badly.
"You mean someone finally making you feel something up there instead of down there?" Jisoo joked, positioning a hand on her heart before dragging her down.
Lisa took the last sip of her drink, Jisoo continuing to smile and nudge her playfully. She took a slow breath, a smile appearing on her lips at her friend's words. She was right. The blonde never believed in the possibility of love in high school. People like Jisoo who had longed for that idealistic love, often in the wrong place, Lisa thought of them as delusional and naive. She never believed in a love like that; that makes you feel like you're drowning, taking away your desire and ability to breathe.
And now I have become like Jisoo.
One of the delusional ones.
"Your shoes hurt."
"The pretty ones always hurt." Jisoo replied, resting a hand on Lisa's arm. The blonde looked away, not being able to stand to look at them anymore without wanting to scream, or worse.
Before he showed up the other day, it had been easy for Lisa to imagine him as a faceless object standing in the way of the two of them being together. A rock in Lisa's path that she knew would disappear as soon as she could get Jennie to open her eyes. But now that this man had a face and a very real presence, it became difficult to simply walk past him. The blonde now knew the hands that passed Jennie by and wrapped around her waist at night. And as her thoughts wandered to the male hands and the two bodies, Lisa felt that pain hit hard in her chest, and her hands reached for her cell phone.
