The false sound of progress

Her left arm pulsed numbly, as if someone had been sticking pins and needles into it from her shoulder to her fingertips. Lisa shifted a little in her chair, increasing the pain. But the uncomfortable tingling was masked by the soft strands of messy brown hair brushed against her naked skin, and by the girl's constant breathing as she slept deeply on Lisa's shoulder.

She had been sitting like this for the last hour, watching the brunette as the light outside the window slowly faded into darkness. She would be lying if she said she wasn't a little chilly, having only a t-shirt covering her upper body. But she was afraid to move, or even reach for a blanket, afraid that this moment would end, this moment of complete peace and clarity. Her breathing became calmer, and she couldn't help a smile from appearing on her lips. Then she remained in a happy silence as Jennie continued to snore softly, Lisa keeping her eyes on the sleeping girl.

After a moment, the blonde shifted her gaze to the small window beside Jennie, the setting sun casting an orange glow across miles and miles of grass. Small houses could be seen on the horizon beside a narrow road. But Lisa knew that all this would soon be gone, both the sight and the tingling, in just a few minutes. Any moment now, the fields would give way to a sprawling city, and the blonde would be forced to wake the sleeping girl on her shoulder.

She ran her fingers gently through Jennie's hair, barely touching the strands that were sticking adorably to her forehead. She looked so at peace. Lisa wanted nothing more than to leave her there, the brunette stirring gently with her gentle touch. A smile appeared on the side of her mouth as another wave of tingling ran up and down the younger girl's arm at the small movement.

It should be killing me, being this close to you.

It should hurt.

Then why isn't the pain coming?

A young redhead began to walk down the aisle, turning to each passenger and grabbing headphones and remaining waste, preparing to disembark in the capital. Lisa enjoyed the last moments of this feeling, knowing that it would be dark by the time the girl opened her eyes. Knowing that once she woke up, the moment would be made more difficult by those cloudy eyes and stubborn walls. After taking a deep breath, the blonde reached out and ran the back of her finger gently across the other's cheek, trying to rouse her.

"Jen."

The girl's eyebrow frowned and she moved a little, before burying her face further into the space between Lisa's arm and her chest. The blonde sighed, ready to run another finger down her cheek when soft lips connected with her skin, leaving her breathless. Long fingers gently wrapped around her wrist, those lips placing lazy kisses on the underside of her arm as her nose rubbed against the sensitive skin.

"Jennie." She repeated, failing miserably to keep her voice normal.

God, this feels so good

The girl's eyes slowly opened, focusing on the blonde, the lazy smile fading. Lisa watched as she realized who was actually sitting next to her. Bringing her hand to her mouth, Jennie ran her fingertips gently across her lips as she sat up to gaze at Lisa cautiously, her cheeks blushing.

"Sorry." She let out still sleepily, no longer able to meet her gaze. "Habit."

And why are you apologizing?

Jennie busied herself adjusting the white blanket that covered her knees as Lisa felt her arm again, her skin tingling uncomfortably. She flexed her fingers and stretched her shoulder tentatively, the brunette still not looking in her direction. A shiver ran down her back as the cabin temperature finally hit her warm arm, causing her to shiver involuntarily.
