**This Chapter is in Mason's POV*

"So, now that you've come back, I have to ask you a question."  Its the perfect time to ask her. She fulfilled her promise. At first I didn't think she would considering how long it took her, but I'm glad she did. She nodded her head, motioning for me to continue.

"What happened? Like in the past?" She sighed, sitting down on a step. "Well, for starters, you already know about how my name isn't Veronica. It's Rebecca." I nodded. Everyone in the whole school found that out.

She took a deep breath before continuing. "I had a twin sister. Her name was Rachel. One day, me and her were  both playing near the steps. We were having fun, Watching our toys slide down the railing.  Everything was going good, until our dad came home. At that time, we didn't hear him come in the house so we continued to play. After a while, I heard his footsteps and I regret to this day not stopping and pulling Rachel along to our room. He always told us not to play on the stairs or we'll be severely punished. Of course, me and her continued playing until he was on the stairs, looking Right at us. Rachel accidentally let her toy slip out her hand and it hit him Right in the face. I immediately took the blame, but that didn't stop him.

He said he'd make us both pay for not listening. I grabbed Rachel's hand and we ran to our room. I was terrified but I never let go of her. He scooped her up out of my grasp and I ran after him. He told her, since she slid the toy down the railing, he would slide her down. Before I could do anything, he pushed her down the railing and she fell." She was sniffling at this point. I rubbed her back soothingly as she continued.

"It was my idea to slide the toys down the railing in the first place. If I would've never suggested it, she would still be here today and I would've never ran away. I watched my own sister die.  What did I do? I ran away. I ran away!!!! I've run away from my problems my whole life!! The sad thing is, I've never had a problem with it, not until now." She took a deep breath and wiped the few tears that stained her cheeks.

"Look, Vernie, I understand,  but you shouldn't run away from all of your problems. Why would you?" I asked.  "It's not something I can't completely stop. It's a habit." I shook my head.

"It doesn't have to be like that. You don't have to be a coward."

"Excuse me?? I'm not a coward."

"Don't lie to yourself. You are a coward." She shook her head. "I pour my heart out to you and you call me a coward. You know what, bye Mason." She started walking away.

Oh hell nah, she's not about to run away again. I grabbed her wrist. "Mason, get off of me." She tried to get free but I embraced her in a hug. "Vernie, don't be like that. I just wanted you to come to a realization. I understand how hard everything is for you. I want you to know I'm here for you."

"I just want my sister back, Mase." I rubbed her back. "I know Vernie. " she cried into my shoulder for a while.

When she finally calmed down, she looked at me for a moment. "Thank you Mason. You're such a great friend." She said with a smile. I returned the smile and nodded.

"Look, Vernie, I like you a lot." I sighed. "I know." She said.

"It just hurts me a lot when you think of me as a friend and I think of you as so much more, and -"

Before I could get another word out, her lips met mine. I instantly kissed back.

After a few seconds she pulls back and smiled, tangling her hand in my hair. "You started rambling." She said with a smile. "I like you so much." I repeated. She smiled.

"I like you too, Mason Lester. I like you too."
