Chapter 5. Mistake

Lourdes POV

A few days later I was sitting on the end of Sam's bed watching Invader Zim, making sure to look back at her and check to see if she was awake or asleep. She sat there eyes bruised from lack of sleep, her hair was in a mess and she looked down right zombified. I sighed and stood up, walking over to her and waved my hand in front of her face.

"I'm still awake..." She turned and looked at me without blinking.

"I was just checking. I have heard stories of people falling asleep with their eyes open." I began unwrapping her bandage to check her stitches and to make sure there was no sign of infection. Her arm looked like it was healing fine so I decided to change the bandage and leave it some what loose. She was already looking out the window, something she had been doing to pass her time awake, and it made me wonder what she was thinking about all that time.

"I'm going to go get you some water. Are you hungry at all?" She shook her head never turning her gaze from the world outside. I felt really sorry for her. Her nightmares must be really disturbing because nobody else I know would do this to themselves, would ever fear falling asleep and I knew Jake was scared for her well being.

I turned from her and walked out of the room tripping over Jake who was sleeping in the middle of the hallway.

"What the hell Jake?" He sat up scratching the back of his head and yawning.

Jake's POV

I felt someone kick me and sat up scratching my aching head. I had barely slept last night since I was so worried about Sam. I could barely keep my eyes open but was able to notice long brown hair and blue eyes staring down at me. Must be Lourdes I thought to myself before yawning really big.

"How is she doing?" I wiped my eyes of the sleep that remained and stood up.

"She's exhausted Jake.. She could crash at any point now and that worries me. Our idea wasn't the smartest if her nightmares are the source of her injuries. What if we can't wake her up?" Lourdes looked down at the ground and I could tell she was seriously worried about Sam.

"She will be okay Lourdes. You look exhausted yourself and I know Andy misses you. I will watch Sam for you." I wrapped her in a reassuring hug before walking toward Sam's room.

"I'm going to bring her a glass of water and Jake, don't let her fall asleep." I watched as Lourdes continued down the hall and I disappeared into Sam's room.

"I can't believe you are doing this to yourself over a nightmare Sam." I sat down on her bed and reached out grazing her cheek with my fingers.

"It's more than a nightmare but you won't believe me. None of you guys do! Nightmares don't harm your mind and body while you sleep! I could die from this and you all think I'm insane... Maybe I am insane..." She looked down at her hands and began to cry.

"I believe you babe. It's just I've never heard of this happening to anyone else. It's all new to us. Come lay with me I have missed you." I laid down next to her with my arms opened and smiled when she laid her head on my chest and hugged me tight.

"it's all new to me too. I just don't know what to do anymore. Sleeping doesn't help it just keeps going on like I'm actually living through it. When I close my eyes it continues from where I left off and each visit gets worse and worse." I hugged her tighter feeling so sorry for her.

"I don't know how much longer I can remain awake. My body is literally shutting itself down. I need to sleep but I'm so scared... Hold me while I attempt to rest please?" She closed her eyes looking so peaceful but even though I wanted to let her sleep I needed to keep her awake.

"Sam you can't sleep yet. Sam stay awake." I tried to wake her up but she was already sleeping like the dead. I kept trying but no matter what I did she wouldn't even move. I began to grow scared and had to make sure she was breathing before getting up and going to get Lourdes or Michelle.

Michelle's POV

"You let her fall asleep!? Did you try to wake her up?" Jake nodded as he sat down on the couch and ran a hand through his hair.

"She's out. I even had to see if she was breathing because she wasn't moving no matter how I tried to wake her up." Jake looked troubled and I know he was worrying about her.

"I'll go watch her you look like you could use some rest Jake. I will let you and Lourdes know if anything happens to her." I smiled at him hoping he would smile in return but he just stood up and nodded before heading into his room.
