Chapter 8: Escaping the Inescapable

They were all trudging through the cave. They had only barely managed to escape the Citadel, but now they were trying to get to an island surrounded by lava. Hopefully their rescue team would arrive, or they wouldn't be late, or too early. Sora and Kairi were walking through hand in hand. None of the Jedi cared because they knew they weren't from the Galaxy and weren't Jedi. Their attachments made them vulnerable, but they couldn't do anything to stop them. Ahsoka was walking beside Riku.

"So, the keyblade," she asked him, "How does that work, anyway?"

He glanced at her and summoned his keyblade.

"Here," he said, handing it to her, "see for yourself."

She grabbed the handle and felt a pulse going through it. It felt rhythmic. Thu-thump. Thu-thump. Thu-thump. She realized it was like a heartbeat. Hardly thinking, she put her hand on his chest and felt his heart. The keyblade and the heart were beating at the same tempo.

"Wow. I... how?"

"Keyblades are directly tied to their wielder's heart."

Ahsoka and Riku began lightly blushing.

"So... right now... it's like I'm... ho-holding your heart?"

"I... I guess."

He gently took the keyblade back. They arrived at a cliff they needed to climb down. Everyone then heard the sound of metal clanking. They turned around and saw crab droids and commando droids coming straight for them. The Jedi ignited their lightsabers and the Sora and Kairi summoned their keyblades. They began fighting back against the droids but they were going to be swamped soon. Obi-wan gave the orders to fasten the ascension cables into the ground. The keyblade wielders and R2's reprogrammed battle droids held the forces off until they were certain everyone else was safe. They then jumped off the cliff and landed with a roll.

"Is everyone okay?" Riku asked.

They saw that a couple of clones and officers had fallen, and all of the reprogrammed droids had been destroyed overhead. They continued on, knowing that more droid forces would be on their way before long. It was still a long distance away from the island they were supposed to meet their rescuers at. Along the way, commando droids began making their way after them on foot. They were dealt with in short order though, by the Jedi and the keyblade wielders. Near a river of lava, Anakin, Ahsoka, Obi-wan, and Master Piell looked behind them. They had sensed something coming their way. And whatever it was, they weren't droids.

"What is it?" Sora asked.

"They're sending hunting animals after us," Obi-wan said.

"We'll take the clones and officers," Kairi said, "and hide away. You can take them out while we protect them."

The wielders lead the officers to another area of the massive system. As soon as the officers were hidden, the animals finally showed themselves. Obi-wan called them "anoobas" and he and Anakin began fighting them near the lava river. Ahsoka and Master Piell had gone to another area to split the forces. The hidden group heard a raspy buzzing sound. Sora, Riku, and Kairi looked for the source and found some crab droids had managed to make their way near them. The three took off toward the droids, allowing the clones and officers to make whatever choice they were comfortable with. The droids were easy to deal with. Then an anooba ran toward them. Sora threw his keyblade into it. It turned from running after the clones to charging the keyblade wielders.

Kairi cast blizzard and it froze in place; in mid air, about to leap on Sora. Riku cast wind on it sending it into the lava river.

"Maybe this is why you aren't a master yet," Kairi teased.
