Adonis P. O. V.
"Did you hear? The boss isn't claiming Adonis as his heir."
"Isn't he passing it down that stepson of his instead?"
"Yep. Sounds a bit much considering he's basically denying his own flesh and blood, don't ya think?"
"It's not like that boy had much going for him anyway. Sure he's tech-savvy, but he has no leadership skills and ambition. He wouldn't last in his father's shoes, not in this business."
"And the stepson does?"
"Much more than Adonis."
"Rumor has it, the kid didn't want the spot to begin with. He will probably drive it through the ground."
"Sounds like he doesn't even belong here."
The three men sit in the lounge, smoking, and drinking. They must have forgotten to close the door behind them because I am standing outside the room, listening to every word they say.
Making sure I am not seen nor heard, I make my way to my father's office - and what are the chances, huh. He speaks about the same topic with my mother. Leaning on the wall, I slide down until I sit on the floor, hugging my legs and staring at the wall across from me.
"I still don't understand your motive here?" Mother says. "Why claim Mal as your successor?"
"He's promising. Unlike Adonis, Maloy is more fit to lead." Father answers.
"To hell with that! You're exploiting him!"
"For the sake of everything I have built, for MY legacy, you damn right I am!" He shouts. "And why care now, huh? You didn't think about him when trading in his father for me."
"I didn't give a damn about that man. But I still care for my son. And what of Adonis?!"
"What about him?!" He scoffs. "If I'm being honest... I hate him. I tried so hard to forge that boy into my image but he's a lost cause. A lowlife."
"That's our son you're talking about?!"
"SO WHAT?!! Sure, he's contributing somehow but that's it! Otherwise, he's of no good use to us! Nothing more than a waste of genes!"
"You better hope he never hears that coming from his own father."
"Spare me the spiel. He's only alive because I allow him to be."
On that day, everything changed. I find myself motionless, not even blinking. The tears eventually well up and roll down my face. To think my father despises me over something I couldn't completely understand at the time - to think I could be dead so easily if he wanted me to be.
Betrayed. Hatred. Lost. Trapped. This is what I feel knowing how my life will turn out from now on. On top of that, if he sees me this way, imagine what he will do to Caleb and Maloy.
I feel a hand on top of my knee. Looking to my right, there my older brother, Maloy, gently smiles at me.
"Come on, Adon. Let's go." He whispers. I take his hand and head to our bedroom. As he sits on the bottom bunk, I go directly to the crib. I pick up Caleb and immediately, I sob with him in my arms. Maloy places his hand on my shoulder. I turn to him. He looks me in the eye and says
"You're not alone. Ever. I swear, I will protect you."

"Adonis? Adonis, love."
