Calum and Veronica

"Perpetuum ligati," Veronica hears Claire whisper from the hallway, making her stomach fall.

"Shit," she punches the wall, indenting it before she runs her hands over her hair, startling Calum.

"What?" he asks, staying away to give her space.

"It worked," she snarls before walking away back down the hallway.

"That's good isn't it?" he asks, confused.

She turns on her heel, her chest inches from his as she hisses in his face, "Do you want your friend dependent on her the rest of his life?"

"No," he shakes his head.

"If this legend is true, then she will be dependent on his blood the rest of her life and he will be addicted to her. His life is in danger if he doesn't want to be Awakened."

"Awakened? You mean become one of you?" Calum asks, remember having this conversation with her several times in the late hours as they traced their fingertips over each other's naked bodies.

"Yes," she turns back, hastily walking to a private room they use for Source Exchange and where she would take Calum if Claire was in their room.

She paces the room as Calum tries to understand fully, "So if they truly have a Bond, she needs his blood to survive?"

"Not exactly, but she needs it for her body to accept any blood fully."

"Okay, how much of his blood would she need?"

"I don't know," she waves her hand out, "Why?"

"Well we can't take a Vampyre with us on tour can we?" he raises a brow at her.

"Youre seriously just trying to work this out? Calum his life is over, now."

"How? He doesn't need her, she needs him."

"He does need her though, she is like a drug to him."

Calum remembers Ashton's begging to see her, his desperate behavior to believe it wasn't the end, the way he acted out so violently when Calum told him it was over. Like a man on drugs, needing another hit. Calum feels sick, thinking about not only Ashton's crumbling life, but the bands too.

"It's not just blood though Calum," Veronica adds quietly, "If it's a true Bond, its more than physical, their souls would be tethered too. But I don't know because no one has ever seen this before. It's not supposed to be real."

"You said this put him in danger of becoming Awakened, is that because he will want to be with her? Be with her forever?"

"That could happen, but it's more that he could overdose. And if he were to harmed while overdosed or if she were to drain him, he would become a Fledgling."

"And that's what again?"

"The first transition into the Awakening, when you're hovering between the two worlds. You have the strength and power of a Vampyre while still remaining in true human form. That's how we have Day guards. But they don't last long because of their insatiable thirst for human blood. Once they have even a drop, the Change will be complete, stopping their heart."

"But you can stay a fledging for a long time right?" Calum asks trying to recall that conversation in their first week of meeting secretly.

"It's rare but yes. You can stay in Fledging form if you drink from your Sire regularly. But human blood calls stronger than your Sires."

"And this is what you're most afraid of?"

"He is at greater risk yes," Veronica turns to him.

"I thought you guys don't bite on the neck though," Calum counters her.

"We do if we plan on draining our Source. But you think she could control herself? He barely can and he isn't a creature dependent on blood."

He sighs and runs his hands through his hair, wondering how they got into this mess to begin with before he states, "But you aren't allowed to Kiss without consent of the Elders, right?"

"Exactly," she huffs at him, terrified. "Why do you think I'm so scared Calum," she walks over to him and grabs his shirt, "If she Kisses him they will both be killed."
