Summary: some background info on you (the reader)

~

* born and raised on Kildare Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina

* you were really close with your mom when you were little, but a sudden, horrific car accident took her from you when you were 8

* she was hit by a drunk driver and killed instantly, leaving you and your dad to try to cope with the tragedy

* to make matters worse, the father of one of your close friends was the one who killed her; you didn't speak to him much after that. you knew it wasn't his fault, and he even apologized profusely on his father's behalf, but sorry couldn't bring your mom back

* his father was known as a drunk and a drug addict, but surprisingly, he somehow knew and was owed a favor by the best defense attorney in the Outer Banks, so he was only sentenced to one year in jail for his crime

* his sentencing caused an uproar in court that day, because somehow the data on his breathalyzer test couldn't be found, and neither could the toxicology report they ran on him once they transported him to the hospital, so it was ruled as accidental vehicular manslaughter, and he wasn't charged with a DUI causing death — but you knew the truth

* your dad never explicitly said it, but you knew that being friends with the boy was a point of contention between you and him. he'd never ask you to give up any of your friends, especially one of your best friends, but you could tell by the look on his face every time he came to your house to ask if you could come out and play or go ride bikes through the neighborhood that the idea of you being best friends with the offspring of your mother's killer (who truly had no part in it, and your dad knew that deep down) made him uneasy

* your dad found a new job on the mainland not long after you buried your mom, and the two of you moved to the suburbs of DC to start over

* you made new friends and adjusted to your new life in your new city, and you soon forgot all about the Outer Banks and your childhood friends there

* your senior year of high school, you applied to the University of South Carolina, and got in

* you moved to Columbia the following fall, with your dad helping you pack up your belongings and situate yourself in your dorm

* you worried there would be a big adjustment period for you, since it had been just you and your dad for so long, but you assimilated quickly, grew to love your classes and the campus, and you even signed up for spring sorority recruitment so you could meet more people and become more involved in college life

* things were going great for you until your sorority was invited to your brother fraternity's welcome mixer for new pledges, and a surprising presence at the party completely throws you for a loop
