Summary: A freak snowstorm traps you in your apartment for a few days, and JJ's excitement over the snow is the cutest thing ever.
~
It's a few days before Christmas, and Columbia was in the path to be hit by a freak winter storm. Growing up in DC, you were used to snow, and you had cackled at the collective freak out the town went into when five inches of snow was predicted in the forecast.
John B and Pope had gone as far as deciding to head home early for the holiday. They left in the morning before the storm was supposed to hit. You and JJ decided to tough it out; mostly because you had an opportunity to spend some time together alone before you were set to go home on Christmas Eve, but also because JJ had never seen more than a few snow flurries in real life, and he was so excited to see real accumulation that he just couldn't bring himself to leave town and miss the opportunity. Not long after the boys left, he and you braved the grocery store for food and booze to get you through the next couple days.
Town was an absolute madhouse. Between last minute Christmas shoppers and southerners who didn't have a clue as to how to handle winter weather, you barely made it out alive with the items on your shopping list. You swung by JJ's apartment for him to pack a bag to stay with you before heading into your apartment where you knew you'd inevitably be cooped up for a few days.
By the time John B texts the group chat to tell you he and Pope have made it back to the Outer Banks, the first flakes had begun to fall. JJ was like a toddler; nose pressed to the glass of your balcony door, eyes bright and watching in wonder.
"Does it normally come down this fast?" JJ asks without turning away from the door to look at you.
You move beside him, looking out into the parking lot. "This is barely more than flurries," you tell him, and he gives you a look of awe.
"So it's going to come down harder?" he asks excitedly.
You smile at how endearing he's being. "Yeah, it'll pick up more here in a bit." You pull your phone from your pocket and open your weather app. There's a red winter storm warning for the city, and you open the description from the National Weather Service. It says the heaviest snowfall is still a couple hours off, and you check the radar to confirm that. "Weather says we'll see the heavy stuff in a couple more hours."
JJ tears his eyes from the snow flurries outside to give you an excited smile. "I can't wait. Real snow!" His smile is infectious.
"You're being so cute right now," you tell him, and he laughs.
"I'm sorry, I know you're used to big snow storms all the time, but I've lived at the beach my whole life. Any time there's a snowstorm on the mainland, it fizzles out to rain by the time it makes it to us."
"No, I like how excited you are. You're kind of precious," you say. He makes a face at you. "While we wait, do you want to watch a movie or something? Might make the time pass faster," you suggest.
"Can we start drinking, too?"
"Yes, but we have to pace ourselves. The last thing I want is to be hammered at three in the afternoon," you reply, and he nods seriously.
"You're right, I might not get the full snow experience if I'm too drunk," he reasons. "Find us something to watch, I'll grab us movie snacks."
~
One movie, two drinks, and a bowl of popcorn later, the flurries have turned into full blown, puffy snowflakes that are falling quickly from the sky. Ecstatic about the storm, JJ abandons the idea of watching another movie and switches the TV over to the YouTube app to put on the yule log video that plays Christmas music.
