Wrecked

Author's note: I originally started writing poetry and original fiction on Wattpad as a way to work through a hard time in my life. Poetry is still a release for me, even to this day. That makes this poem a bit cathartic for me. (Basically, I write when I'm passionate about somethign-To All the Boys I've Loved Before style.)

Up ahead in the distance, I see a strange light.

I cry upon seeing a smile so bright.

So hopeful you were, my dear navigator.

For you knew I hailed from the equator,

still you placed such hopes on a lowly sailor.

As I drifted in the ocean measuring in scalars,

you shifted my course and set on to it a new path.

Columbus never reached his promised land,

yet not everything goes as planned.

A legend admired by the Puerto Rican people,

his achievements become merits of the townspeople.

Is that what it will be like for you?

Such a prominent leader whom even barriers pushed through?

If all could recall of your greatness,

even the sharpest men could develop oblateness.

You left no undue tasks to pursue,

and I still feel so blue.

Looking ahead, the monsters lie waiting in the waters below.

Could you be here with me reminiscing in the afterglow?

I do not need a cannon nor a sword.

Just stow away on board,

and accompany me on all the harrowing trips.

The boats pass by while we glance at enemy ships,

all petrified except you.

Chaos can ensue,

and your calm visage befriends even the most gnarly buccaneer.

I am still left unclear.

How come you have vanished beyond the veil?

You taught me how to sail,

now teach me how to hold the ropes and let go.

Do not fret, I shall not have backflow.

I have arrived at the shore.

No need for a followup,

as I am all grown up.
