engulfing doubts

Hannah dressed me from head to toe. Aside from the cream dress she made me wear, she  matched it with this small silver necklace she had but gave to me.

I tried to reject it, but Hannah won over me.

She also made me wear these white sandals that were in the closet and we were both surprised to find that they were my size. Actually, all of the clothes and items were just right for me.

"Ah, she really went all out." Hannah whispered more to herself than to me.

"Who?" I asked.

"Hazel. She must've been so happy to spend time with you."

Hazel...

"Oh, uhm... I see, haha..."

I couldn't help but look down. I didn't know how to respond. Again, the mixed-up feelings I had came back.

Why are they so happy that I'm here? What if it turns out that I'm not the one they're looking for? What if I get used to this and it just ends up disappearing?

Hannah made me to sit down in front of the vanity as she combed my hair and proceeded to braid it.

She talked about how pretty my hair was and how soft it was, but I always thought that they were too rough. She proceeded to powder my face and put a touch of colours on my lips that made them pinkish.

Finally, when she finished she was so happy with the result. I stared back at the mirror to question whether the girl that looked back was really me, but sure enough it was me.

I still have the same monstrous eyes that my town hated.

The doors opened to reveal both Maddie and Hazel coming into the room and as soon as they saw me, they both exclaimed.

"You pretty thing! I have to take a picture of this and send it to Cassian." Hazel said taking out a phone and taking pictures of me.

Hearing the name of Cassian instantly made me feel shy and I couldn't help but bite my lips in nervousness and look away from the camera.

"Enough Haze, let's go eat. I'm starving." Maddie said reminding Hazel that she was getting overhyped again.

"Oh, but of course! Let me just... it's sent! Let's go, the food's all here," the ray of sunshine said and led us all out of the room.

The first thing that I noticed when I exited my room was the smell. It immediately stirred my hunger  and I couldn't wait to taste the food.

When we got to the dining room, the workers were finishing setting up the table and when they saw us arrive they bowed their heads and left.

Although there were only the four of us, there were at least ten chairs and if you add more, the table would be able to accommodate much much more.

I sat still as Hazel was mentioning the kinds of food that were in front of us, words that were incomprehensible to me. I could feel someone looking at me and when I looked, it was Maddie.

I couldn't quite decipher the look on her face. Was she observing me? Was she finally seeing just how misplaced I was to be here? Did she pity me?

Caught, she chose to smile and so did I.

Her smile reminded me of her brother. Cassian.

"Well then, dig in everyone." Hazel said but was also the first one to reach out to the baked potatoes garnished with cheese and what seemed like bits of bacon.
