Chapter 11 The jilted husband
• 👑 •
Ortiz de Rozaz palace
"Free Gonzalo and arrest me instead."
Her words echoed throughout his office. Madrid Anselmo stood there as he stared at his beloved wife—whom just all of sudden, appeared like nothing happened after all those years. It was eight years ago since he last saw her in flesh. Eight years ago since she ran away from him in that very office after their fight. Eight years of him mourning for her death. Eight years of him becoming a miserable and a spiteful man. Eight years of her faking her death.
And now, just like that, she wanted to substitute herself on behalf of Gonzalo's place at the prison? She easily decided for herself that instead of Gonzalo, she'll pay for his crimes?
He could feel his chest going up and down due to his heavy breathing. He closed his eyes to calm himself. Earlier, his tears fell down as he saw her again. He won't deny to himself that he misses his wife so much—that there was no day that he didn't wish that he would die too so he could be with her in the afterlife.
But now, it's different. She's very much alive.
And the two of them changed.
She faked her death. She lied to him. She betrayed him by making him a fool of himself as he was mourning for a woman who wasn't even dead. He mourned for her for years. Every day he keeps blaming himself for her death—that he was too selfish for not going after her after their fight. He blamed himself for his family's demise.
And by just looking at her now, Sofia Elena didn't even look regretful for letting those happen.
Instead, he could notice the hate she still has for him on her eyes. The same hate that she had for him after learning all the truth about their families.
He smiled at her but it was tight. "It's been eight years, Fia. Won't you hug me first before sacrificing yourself for somebody else's crime?"
Napansin niya ang pagkunot ng noo nito.
"And why the hell would I hug you?"
"Because I am your husband and you are my wife," he answered, shaking his head. "It's been years since we last saw each other so it's reasonable for a married couple to hug each other."
Alam niyang nagsimula na itong makaramdam ng galit—pero huminga ito ng malalim. Gaya niya ay pinapakalma rin nito ang sarili. "Look, Anselmo." She sounded serious. "I didn't come here to get back to you nor to be with you again. Pumunta ako rito dahil sa ginawa mo kay Gonzalo. Hindi makatarungan ang pag-aresto mo sa kanya. If you really want to know, he did all those things because you're becoming a ruthless and a tyrant king."
