"I'm home," Callie called as she and JJ walked in the door. Heading down the hallway they reached the dining room where her brother and parents were sitting eating dinner. With the electricity out they had a few candles sitting in the middle of the table, helping to keep the room somewhat illuminated as the sun went down.
"Hey, JJ," Finn greeted as the two entered the room.
JJ gave a curt nod with a smile, "Hey, man. How's it going?"
The youngest shrugged as he picked some more food up with his spoon, "Alright. I had to work today."
"The hardships of helping family," Mr Merrick laughed. "There's still some food left in the kitchen if you kids are hungry."
Callie thanked her father and then she and JJ went into the kitchen. They found a pot of soup sitting on the stovetop in the corner. Thankfully it ran on gas, so at least for now, they would still have hot food until the power came back on.
Grabbing two bowls from the cupboard, Callie went over and ladled them both a serving of the meal. After getting two spoons out, she and JJ went and sat out at the table on the back patio.
As they took a seat, Callie got some matches and lit some candles at the centre of the table so that it wasn't so dim.
"I can't wait until they get the power back on," she mumbled to herself as she stirred the spoon in the bowl."It's not that bad," JJ shrugged. "More excuses to get out of my house."
Callie felt her heart sink at his comment, immediately feeling selfish for being worried about something as trivial as electricity.
"You know you can always stay here, right? Or the Chateau.""Callie, if you want to see me more, all you have to do is ask," JJ teased.
The girl rolled her eyes, a strange nervous sensation tugging at her. "I don't know what you're talking about, I was offering you the backyard. I think we might still have an old dog kennel somewhere if it rains."
"That's so thoughtful of you. I'm touched."
They finished their dinner and just sat talking as the moon rose in the sky. Sitting and joking with JJ in the warm night air helped Callie to forget about anything bothering her. From the store flooding to almost being shot out on the Marsh, it was nice to just forget about all of it for a while.
Eventually, Mr Merrick came outside and broke up their conversation. "Hey, you two, sorry to interrupt. It's getting late so we're all headed to bed. JJ, we've got the pull-out set up in the living room for you."
"Thanks, Mr Merrick, sir. I appreciate it," JJ told the man gratefully.
"Don't worry about it, kid. You know you're always welcome here," Mr Merrick said, waving him off. "And don't call me sir; makes me feel old."
