It had only been almost five days since John B and Sarah Cameron had been lost to the waves of the storm that ripped through the Outer Banks. Callie had finally worked her way through all of her tears and was now just laying in her bed.
Ever since the night on the beach she only ever left the comfort of her blankets for the necessities or to occasionally see the Pogues. JJ had consoled her for that time but once she was home and alone with her thoughts, all she could think about was John B.
All the Pogues were experiencing the same thing, holed up and trying to find ways to cope. Kiara was back on Figure Eight, Florence going out to visit and check in on her. Pope was trying to distract himself with work at his parents' shop. And JJ had been spending the majority of his time at the Chateau.
Callie lay on her side in her bed staring out of her window. It still didn't feel real. No matter how many times she recalled the interaction with Shouppe, something in her mind just refused to accept it.
There was a light knocking before Callie's bedroom door creaked open. "Hey, sweetie, are you awake?" Callie heard her mum ask as she walked into the room cautiously.
Callie didn't answer as she stared out the window. She felt the mattress shift beneath her under her mother's weight as the woman sat on the bed by her side.
Reaching a hand out, she ran her fingers through her daughter's hair. "I wish I knew what to say. John B was a wonderful boy and such a great friend to you. I can't even begin to comprehend how much you miss him."
Callie's jaw clenched as she sniffled, trying not to cry again. "I don't think I can, either," she mumbled, not saying much more than she had since the night on the beach.
Her mother thought for a moment, trying to think of the best way to word what she wanted to say. She was worried about the girl.
"What I do know, is that John B wouldn't want you wasting away in your bedroom. JJ is here. You're doing the memorial today, aren't you?"Callie forced herself to nod, slowly sitting up in her bed. Her muscles ached at the movement, trying to convince her to dive back under her blankets. She watched as her mother went over and lifted her blinds the whole way, allowing the sun to filter into the room. It was a bright day, the weather warm like most in the Outer Banks. She was glad that it wasn't a gloomy day given what they planned to do.
"Get dressed. I'll let JJ know you'll be ready soon," her mother said as she left the room, closing the door behind her.
Dragging herself out from beneath her blankets, Callie went to her wardrobe and pulled out some clothes to suit the weather. Pulling on a pair of shorts and a cami over a bikini, she did her hair up and walked over to her mirror. She looked like she had been punched with how severe the bags under her eyes were.
