The freezing cold water enveloped Callie, sending shockwaves through her. Her body reacted immediately, fighting to get her up towards the surface as the waves tried to move her.

She gasped as she broke the surface, calling the boy's name. He still didn't respond but she could see him. Swimming over to him, she was quick to turn him over so that he was no longer facedown in the water and at risk of drowning.

Well, less at risk of drowning, at least.

Callie wrapped an arm around him, using the other to keep them afloat as she kicked in the water. "JJ," she winced as she paddled, pleading with him. "JJ, please. I need you to wake up."

The waves moved the two of them about as Callie did her best to hold on to him. She was smacking his face with the hand holding onto him, doing anything to try to get him to open his eyes.

"JJ, c'mon, this isn't the time to be stubborn. I can barely surf, do you really think I can hold us both up in the ocean?" she asked, sarcasm being her go-to to try and get him to respond.

When he still didn't answer, she could feel herself beginning to cry before she could control it. JJ was one of her best friends and one of the most important people in her life.

Sure, recently she could barely stand to look at him but that didn't change how she felt about I'm beneath it all. Callie couldn't lose him. She refused to.

"Please, JJ," she sobbed, continuing to hit his cheek. "I need you to wake up, okay? We are in the middle of a fight, you don't get to go and do this! So wake up so that we can sort this out!"

Callie could feel herself beginning to strain. She tried to lay somewhat on her back in hopes that it would help her to stay afloat longer, but JJ was still weighing her down. Readjusting her hands on him, she continued to paddle and kick, keeping them both above the water as best she could.

"Just stay with me, please," she begged, knowing that she wouldn't be able to keep this up much longer. "John B will be here. John B's coming."

She wasn't sure who she was trying to convince more at that point. Either way, she kept hitting JJ's cheek as she continued to keep an eye out for any sign of their friends.

There was still no sign of them anywhere, the waves threatening to drag them away from the boat. Callie spluttered as she choked on the seawater, losing hope slowly.

Giving up on trying to wake him up for now, she decided to try and get the attention of the others. "John B, help!" she screamed as loud as she could, tilting her head back to keep her mouth above water. "Kiara! Pope! Sarah! Help!"
