"Thank you so much for bringing her home, Sheriff," Mr Merrick said as he walked Shoupe to the door. "We were worried sick."

"I'm sure you were," he agreed. "I'm sorry to say, but your car, well. . . it didn't make it. We'll have it towed and you might be able to repair it, but it doesn't look good."

Mrs Merrick sighed with a nod, "We're just glad that Callie and the rest of her friends are alright."

"I've been telling them they need to stop messing about."
The Sheriff gave Callie a pointed look, "Make sure you clean that cut of yours."

"Thanks again, Sheriff," Mr Merrick told the man. "I'll come by the station tomorrow to get the car."

Shoupe nodded before saying goodbye and finally leaving. When the door shut, Callie expected them to start yelling straight away but instead, she was greeted with an awful silence.

Her father was yet to turn away from the closed door and her mother was sitting staring at the kitchen bench she stood in front of. Callie obviously didn't enjoy being yelled at, but the suspense made it feel ten times worse.

The sound of footsteps made them all look in the direction of the hallway. Finn froze when he saw everyone staring at him.

"Finn, not now," their father said.

The boy pointed to the sink, "I just wanted to grab some water from the-"

"Not now," he repeated, his voice firm.

Finn looked over at Callie, trying to figure out what was going on. The boy wasn't oblivious, he had heard Shoupe and seen the Sheriff's car leaving out his window.

The boy knew that he wasn't going to be able to help his sister out of this one, however. So, he mumbled something before turning and walking back to his bedroom.

As soon as they heard the boy's bedroom door shut, a switch seemed to flick for Mr Merrick. "What the hell were you thinking?"

Callie forced herself to look at her father. "My friends needed my help."

"We understand that, we do," her mother assured her. "And we were always happy that you wanted to help your friends - but not when it comes at the expense of this family."

"What does that even mean?"

"We saw the photos from the accident. Do you realise how much it's going to cost to have the truck repaired? Not even just that," her mother exclaimed. "You could've been killed, Calliope!"

Callie was on the verge of tears as she shook her head, "I needed to help-"

"No," her father said sharply. "Enough."
