(Jack's POV)
What happened after Toothless shot Merida was a bit of a blur. We had realized that we had no chance against the dragon when we were also protecting one of our own, Merida, who was on the ground, covered in burns.
Getting rid of the threat was priority number one, because Rapunzel would not have time to heal anyone while fighting.
It hadn't been too hard either, surprisingly. Attacking Merida had given us the motivation to work harder, faster, which is how I was able to freeze the ground around Toothless's feet, the ice covering his paws and stopping him from moving too much.
Then all we had had to do was use Rapunzel's hair to heal him the same way she had healed the nightmares back to dream side.
I watched as her hair began to glow, inspecting the dragon, hoping to see the change happen. But nothing did happen, nothing at all.
It was strange, because it should have worked the way it had with the mares. I narrowed my eyes, focusing on the dragon's eyes, looking for the dark haze so often coming with Pitch's spell, but there were no specks there, no dark layer over the green. My eyes widened.
"This wasn't Pitch's doing!" I yelled and the others turned to me, Rapunzel where she had been singing, Hiccup where he was next to Merida, but neither could react and I didn't have time to explain before the dragon turned his fire on the ice around his paws, melting himself free and he took flight.
Rapunzel's hair had been snuggly wrapped around his tail for the magic to connect, meaning that when he flew, he took her with him. She yelped loudly, hanging by her hair and feet just barely missing the circle of fire going around. I wasn't sure where the dragon was going, I just knew that Rapunzel shouldn't be alone.
But neither should Hiccup and Merida be, not when the more skilled fighter was down. I hesitated, I couldn't be with both at once.
"If you don't help her I swear to god," Merida said through gritted teeth, face and voice an evident tell to her pain. It was a wonder she wasn't screaming. But her voice wasn't the only one I cared for right now, because she wouldn't be the only one I'd leave behind if I went now.
I looked to Hiccup, who sighed - though it seemed to be more because of their lack of luck than anything else - then he nodded once, firmly and surely.
I nodded once to them both, then commanded the wind to carry me into the sky and after the night fury.
It was easy to see what the main problem there was. Too far of a length of hair was between her and the dragon's tail, so she couldn't reach to unwrap herself, but I could do that for her now that I was there with her.
I used wind for the job, opting not to get too close to the dragon. Because not only was it a fast dragon that spewed fire, it was also a dragon that spewed fire surrounded by trees.
With the help of the wind, I unwinded the hair, but there was something I had forgotten to take into account; Rapunzel was ten feet above the ground.
With the hair no longer holding her up, she fell, and I wasn't fast enough to catch her.
She let out a startled shout as she tumbled, a few twigs scratching her before she hit the ground, landing mainly on her shoulder. A popping sound came at the hit, but she seemed to have too little air in her lungs to express the pain in a sound.
Probably for the better, considering how Pitch and Gothel were most likely close enough to hear if she were to scream.
The dragon continued flying forward as if he hadn't noticed her dropping, which was strange for a creature with his senses.
I didn't waste time wondering and instead flew down, joining Rapunzel's side and helping her roll onto her back, her left shoulder visibly dislocated. I grimaced, not sure what else to do.
"That went well." she breathed out with a small grimace of her own.
Other than the shoulder, she seemed to have a few scratches on her face and hands from the twigs, but the winter clothing on had protected her from further wounding.
For a girl who had spent most of her life stuck but safe in a small house, she handled the pain pretty well, I noted as she immediately pushed herself up, hesitating when a nauseous look washed over her face.
"Can you heal it?" I asked her and she seemed puzzled for a moment, then realized what I meant.
"No, it doesn't work on me, only others," she explained, beginning to stand. "Speaking of others, we need to get to Merida before those wounds get her killed." she continued with a determined edge in her voice, cradling her arm to her side, though acting as if it was nothing but an inconvenience.
"Wait a second," I said and she frowned at me, but waited for me to go on. "We don't know what situation the others are in, but we will most likely have to be at our a-game, so we need to fix your arm." Her frown deepened.
"And how do we do that?"
"We pop it back and put it in a sling," I told her and she scrunched her nose at the idea of popping it.
"Do you know how to?"
"I was hoping you did." She frowned again.
"Why would I know that?" I shrugged and she sighed. "Have you any experience in the matter?"
"I saw it done once on a kid from my village, but that was a long time ago."
"Your still way ahead of me in the matter." My eyes widened. She wanted me to pop her arm back in place? I wasn't sure if I could do that. She seemed to see my hesitance. "The others might need us and you were right, we need to be at our best." I hesitated a second longer, then nodded.
"Alright. I'll use the cold to numb you, then I'll just pop it," I said, using the memory of the past to place my hands the same way my mother had in my time, when I had dared a kid to climb a tree and the kid had fallen and ended up with the same injury to hers.
"Just do it, please," she asked me, eyes shut tight with the knowledge of what was about to happen. I moved his hands under her coat but above the dress to let the cold seep in, and some of the pained tension in her eased.
One, two, three, I counted in my head, then my hands moved like my mother's once had. The shoulder moved back in place while Rapunzel slapped a hand over her mouth to suppress the groan that came.
She opened her eyes slowly and I gave her an apologetic smile, rolling off the scarf the queen had insisted I wore despite my explanation of how I didn't feel the cold at all. I tied the fabric's ends into a knot and put it over her head, pulling her hair out in what turned out to be a tedious process while she put her arm in the make-shift sling.
Once that was done, she took a shaky breath, then put on a smile. "Let's go help our friends." And then we were off.
Guess who's getting her second vaccine dose soon. And guess who's afraid of needles (help xD) On a much better note, Scream 5 is coming out in the cinema tomorrow and I'll watch it soon.
Oh, and sorry that this part was sort of intense, but don't worry, it will get worse :)
Edit; I just realized that the last five paragraphs where in third POV instead of first which the rest of this story has been. I fixed it so that it matches the rest, I blame this story I'm writing by hand right now, which is in third POV.
