"Max, didn't you say you were hiring people for your, y'know, superhero team?"

"Yup, you heard that right!"

"And you picked me out of several dozen different people because you said I was the only one suitable for the job?"

"Yep!"

"So if that's the case, why is my job to fix the vending machine?"

"Hmm? What do you mean by that?" Max opened the garage door leading into their base. The base was actually a storage unit owned by Pam, remodelled by Jessie as a gift for Max.

Max walked over to a desktop and started rapidly typing the passcode. Meg looked at her cautiously, wondering what to say next.

"Well, I just... couldn't feel as though you miscalculated something? Like, oh I don't know, just a few tiny numbers-"

"What numbers?" Max grabbed her energy drink from a shelf and started drinking.

"Well, just to list a few: the fact that I have a PHD in robotics like Jessie, maybe the fact that I gave Jessie the designs for Surge, or maybe-"

"Hey! Yo! Max, can you let me in?" Surge asked through the intercom.

"Hold that thought." Max interrupted. She quickly ran to the garage door and pressed a button with her finger.

"Thanks Max!" Surge called over. The big red and yellow robot lumbered over to where they were.

"No problem! Pretty sure Jessie plans to install voice commands in the future."

"Sweet! Oh, hey Meg!"

"Hey Surge. I'm uh- just trying to get Max's attention to talk for a quick sec."

"Oh. Well don't worry I just came back here to charge." He grabbed an eight pack of energy drink in his hand and left.

Meg focused back on Max. "Alright, back to the topic at hand-"

"Hold on." Max logged on to the computer and immediately went on EBrawl.

"Max, I just need a few seconds to-."But Meg was suddenly interrupted by a blaring alarm.

Max looked at her watch and tapped it twice. "Looks like a robbery on an... ice cream store? Well I guess I could just handle this myself." She stood up and grabbed her energy drink. She patted Meg's head. "Maybe another time Meg." Then she took a gulp, wiped her lips, and sped off.

"Yeah," Meg said, trying not to feel disappointed. "Maybe another time."

...

For the next few days, this same cycle repeated. Each time Meg would approach Max, she would either find some rather random excuse to leave or simply ignore her. Surge wouldn't say anything either; when asked he'd only stare at Meg before running off. It was possible they were sympathetic but it was hard to tell with robots. Nevertheless, after only a week as an intern, she decided to take matters into her hands.

So at Saturday, when Max made her excuse, rushed off, and returned at 8 PM that night, Meg was already waiting at the door, arms crossed and a tad bit annoyed. It was only her first week on the job but she was already getting sick of Max ignoring her.

"Max, where have you been?"

"Huh?" Max replied, obviously tired and groggy. "What do you mean?"

"You said that it was just a small robbery, and that you were able to handle it by yourself." Meg huffed.

Max sighed. "Hold on, I can't think without my energy drink. Just hold-"

"No." Meg quickly snatched the red and yellow canister before Max could raise it to her lips. "I want answers. Why are you ignoring me?"
