                                              Gwen

I woke up with fear. Alex and Jaye were still asleep.

How would I face the day? Yesterday no one really noticed me, which I was thankful for. But they might today.I get out of bed and get my clothes from the drawers. It’s six thirty. I take a shower and  change into the school uniform and under that, tights. I don’t feel like wearing heels today so I slip into some flats. I re-straighten my hair and put some makeup on. By now, Alex is waking up.

She doesn’t say anything. She just glides into the bathroom and a little while later I hear the water running in the tub. Then Jaye wakes up. She’s really talkative.

“Hey, Gwen! You look so pretty today! I wonder if Cerise Van Sorret woke up yet. What are we having for breakfast? Alex takes so long in the bathroom. My bed in lumpy.”

So I decide to answer her.

“Thanks, probably not, don’t know, don’t care, that’s your problem.”

And with that, I get my bag and leave the room.

Downstairs only a few are awake. Gabby Jason, a junior, Millie Watkins, a freshman and a boy I don’t know all sat in the kitchen. He’s super cute and has dark brown hair and brown eyes. They’re all wearing the school uniform but the mystery boy looks really good in it.

He talking like some kind of genius and Gabby and Millie don’t really look interested. But strangely, I understand what he’s talking about.

I must’ve interrupted him because as soon as I walk into the kitchen, he looks at me.

“Good morning, dear.” Clare calls from the stove.

“Morning, Clare.”

“Why, hello there.” He says smoothly.

“Hi.” I reply.

I sit down and take a bagel and start buttering it.

“I’m Adam Coralli.” He introduces himself.

“Gwen Calber, nice to meet you.” I say.

Millie raises an eyebrow at me. She must recognize my name from last year. Oh great. And I remember her being excellent about spreading rumors.

“Gabby, could you pass the raspberries.”

Gabby reaches for them but Adam snatches them quickly and hands them to me.

“Uhh, thanks.” I say.

I try to avoid looking at him staring at me. It’s kind of awkward. I just keep quietly buttering my bagel and put a raspberry in my mouth every once and a while.

Before I know it there’s a crowd of hungry freshmen stealing all the food and then they’re gone. The only things left are the strawberry jam and apples.

Alex and Jaye come down and are disappointed.

“Seriously?” Jaye whines.

“Why don’t they go buy something from Starbucks?” Alex snaps. She snatches an apple and absentmindedly starts to put jam on it.

“Were we actually this annoying last year? I’ll have to ask a junior.”

Millie straightens up in her seat and smiles at Alex. She clears her throat.

“But really, what juniors do I know?”

Millie clears her throat again and starts to wave slightly.

“All I know about is Bertram. Ick.”

Millie huffs and heads out with her school bag.

“You know Millie’s a junior.” I inform.

“Yeah, but she’s scary. She’s too tall.”

“That doesn’t mean you can’t ask her a question.”

“Eh.”

I start to get up and take my bag hanging on the chair. Adam stands up quickly and hands me my bag.

“Mind if I walk you to school?” He asks me.

“Sure.” I say.

Alex and Jaye giggle. I roll my eyes.

We head out and the weather is pretty cold. I’m glad I wore tights.
