Matt’s POV

I’m not sure what just happened. One minute I was ready to walk up to Val and profess my undying love for her while beating the hell out of Harrison and the next, I was wrapped in Lucy’s arms and kissing her. Not that it was a bad situation to be in...just unexpected. And it seemed perfectly natural...which felt oddly unnatural.

“Are they watching?”she asked.

Hmm back to reality. I turned my head slowly survey the crowd.

“Yeah he’s watching and he is none too pleased.” I told her. “He’s coming this way now.”

Lucy’s face flushed and I could feel her heart beating so fast.

“And Val?” she asked for my sake. “Is she coming over too?”

I laughed out loud at the scene in front of me. “Well let’s just say she stopped him in his tracks and he’s probably going to need to have his shoulder looked at. She’s yanking him across the room so fast.”

Her face dropped for a second but she recovered nicely with a smirk “Well, then our first mission was successful. You were great, by the way. Way to pick up on my hints.”

Yeah she was kinda easy to read. It was almost as if I knew what she wanted without her having to tell me. That’s weird…really weird. Val usually had to draw me a picture if she even wanted me to pass her the salt.

“No you were great. Very sexy. For a second I thought they guys were going to bust out the dollar bills .” I told her pulling her closer as we swayed to the music again.

Her eyebrows crashed together and she looked pissed. Uh oh, wrong thing to say Matt…ok fix it, fix it.

I’m trying…I’m trying!

“Sorry that’s not what I what meant…”

“Oh really?” she asked

“Well I meant it but...”

“But what?”

“It was a compliment...I swear.”

“Do you always compliment women that way?”

Was this a trick question? “Well, yeah, I guess.”

“And has it been working for you?”

“Up till today.” I said smiling at her trying to invite her to see the humour.

“You’re a real mess, Sanders.”

“Yeah I know. I’m sorry.”

She looked at me without speaking for a minute. “Why do you apologize so much?”

I shrugged. “I was always in trouble with Val, always doing something she didn’t like. I guess it’s more of a habit than an actual apology.”

“Do you even know how to apologize for real?” she asked curiously.

“Well sure...doesn’t everyone? Just say I’m sorry.”

“And that’s supposed to make things better?” she asked

“Well doesn’t it?”

“No wonder you were always in the dog house, “she replied.

“And I suppose you know the proper etiquette for an apology?”

“Of course I do. My mother taught me,” she said smugly.

“Well do tell...I’d love to be enlightened on the details of mother’s teaching.” I said sarcastically.
