Lucy’s POV
“I can’t believe there wasn’t a single thing on that damn quiz that I remembered studying.” Zoey told me as we carried our lunch trays to our designated table.
Mark passed by with his friends and I ducked out of the way, behind a group of football players.. I didn’t want to him to see me.
“Seriously?” Lana asked from her seat “You’re hiding. Not in the mood to deal with that asshole?”
I shrugged as I pulled out my chair and plopped myself down.
An asshole I’ve been trying to get back, I thought to myself. What is wrong with you Lucy? I guess I’m just a sucker for punishment.
“Lucy, are you listening to me?” Zoey asked.
“Sure…wait...no...I’m not...what did you say?”
“I asked you if you were going to see the guys at Fitzgerald’s on Friday. I know you haven’t seen any of their gigs. I thought if you two were an item, you should at least stop in to hear him sing.”
I nodded even though Matt hadn’t said a word to me about going. “Maybe.”
“Where is the handsome disaster anyway?” Lana asked “Is it true Kelly kissed him?”
“Did she tell you that?” Zoey asked.
“Yeah but I didn’t believe her. She said it was awful,” Lana replied opening her milk carton “Is it awful Lucy?”
Both girls looked at me intently. “Actually not as bad as I thought it would be.”
“Will Romeo be joining us for lunch today?” Lana pressed.
“Hmm, I think he said they may come over. ”I said and then turned to Zoey to try to change the subject “You know if you aren’t nicer to Brian, he’s never going to notice you as anything other than Zacky’s nagging little sister.”
“I am Zacky’s nagging little sister,” Zoey frowned this time. “I don’t think he’ll ever get over that.”
I laughed “You don’t think? I mean he does mess with you a lot. That has to mean something. Maybe it means he’s secretly in love with you but won’t risk telling you so Zacky won’t kick his ass.”
“Doubtful. The only person Brian falls in love with over and over is himself.” She scoffed and Lana agreed.
“Ouch.” I told her, as I spied Val with her sister in tow, approaching Mark.
“Skank alert,”Zoey said frowning and motioning in her direction.
“I didn’t know you felt so adverse to Ms. Dibenedetto.” I said laughing. Zoey tried to be friendly with everyone.
“Yeah well, I’m not adverse. I’m just not necessarily a fan,” Zoey said sipping her soda.
Hmm, it took Zoey a lot to dislike anyone. I smelled gossip. “Ok spill.” I demanded.
Her eyes widened “Spill? There’s nothing to spill.”
“Uh, yeah there is. You don’t hate people for no reason. It’s not in your nature.” I tried to reason.
She sighed “Well you remember when Brian and Carolyn Hines broke up?”
“Yes,”I said slowly…curiosity taking over.
“Well…”Zoey said staring at her hands as she rubbed them back and forth on her lap “Do you remember why Carolyn said she broke up with him?”
