Matt’s POV
"You're getting there." she said.
Lucy. I couldn’t get that moment out of my head. It kept replaying like a favorite movie scene.
She was right about the whole 'smitten' thing. I had to show Val I was head over heels in love with someone else. With Lucy. That would make Val jealous.
Her speech kept ringing in my ears.
Opening doors for them, pulling out their chair for them, and walking hand in hand with him.
Doing stupid things when he gives you a smile, like laughing nervously, forgetting your own name or not being able to make full sentences.
Everything begins to look beautiful.
Every dream seems to come true.
Every moment… every time… always… there's only one name on your lips.
Lucy was definitely smitten over Harrison. But what I didn’t understand was, if she was so smitten over him, why did he leave her? Val left me because I wasn't smitten, but Lucy was. It didn’t make any sense.
I couldn't answer my own questions, because before I knew it I was in front of Lucy’s English class waiting to walk her to lunch. She was finishing taking down notes and she was the only one left in the classroom. I stepped in and waited near her desk. She had terrible handwriting. Finally she finished her chicken scratch and started packing up. I was about to take her books.
"Umm… should I carry your book?" I asked her. She was better at this shit than me.
"No it's okay." She smiled. And we headed out to one of the center tables in the Campus quad. We figured this was a good place to be seen together.
However Val was nowhere in sight like she usually was at this time of the day. I saw Jimmy walk by with Brian and Johnny toward the lunch line. They all had surprised expressions on their face. Oh shit…Jimmy…
"Quick, what's your favorite color?" I quickly asked her.
"Excuse me?" She looked shock at my question.
"What's your favorite color?" I repeated, slower.
"I heard you. I’m not fucking deaf,” she asked. “Where is this coming from?"
"Jimmy was asking me what was going on between us and I said that we're friends. And that we're getting to know each other."
"Okay." she encouraged me to go on.
"He asked me if I asked what your favorite color is. He said if we were really going to be friends, I would find out your favorite color."
"Do you know his?"
"Yeah apparently I do. It’s green.” I told her and she laughed. I liked the way her face looked when she smiled. Her blue eyes sparkled.
"Just because you know someone doesn't mean you have to know their favorite color,” she said.
"He also asked what we talk about. What you and I have in common?"
"You should tell him to worry about what he and Leana have in common and mind his own business" she said firmly "But I don't really have a favorite color. I like them all."
"Mine's blue." I said. So if Jimmy asks her she has an answer.
"Good to know." She smiled again.
I wasn't done. We had to talk about each other if this was going to work, if it was going to be believable. But I just can't play twenty questions with her. What do we talk about?
