Hange raced through the forest, being careful not to trip over her long dress. She was so close to her destination, but her pursuers were catching up.
Think, Hange! Think! she thought to herself. You gotta lose them somehow!
Hange looked up, looking for an answer, running smack bang into a thick vine.
"Ow!" she cried, rubbing her face and readjusting her glasses.
She looked at the vine and tugged it. It was sturdy. Surely it could support her weight.
She looked back—her pursuers were close. Hange quickly shimmied up the vine and walked carefully along a branch before leaning on a thick tree trunk, hiding behind the tree's thick leaves.
She watched as her parents and a bunch of their servants ran past below her, completely unaware that she had outsmarted them once again.
She giggled quietly and waited for a few minutes to make sure they were definitely gone. The only sound was the sound of the leaves as they were carried by the wind.
The wind rustled her hair and blew her fringe into her eyes.
"You must always make sure your hair is neat and tidy," Hange's mother would always say. "Prim and proper, like the young lady you are."
Hange's parents would always make sure she looked nice, always dressing her up in the fanciest of dresses and always doing her hair up in elaborate styles.
Like a doll.
Today, her mother had put Hange's hair into a tight bun, which she did often. It felt uncomfortable on Hange's head, so she let her hair down and restyled it into a high ponytail.
She blew her fringe out of her eyes and started to climb back down the vine.
Hange began to make her way towards her destination: a small clearing hidden by thick trees. Her haven.
A small stream trickled through the clearing, and many animals and plants could be found there. It was Hange's favourite place to be, especially during Spring.
Hange kicked through piles of leaves as she walked and laughed, picking leaves out of her hair. Suddenly, she heard shouting from nearby.
"Hey! I think I heard something!"
Hange gasped and started to sprint towards the clearing.
I don't want to go home! I don't want to go home! I don't want to go home!
She didn't stop, even as she burst through the cover of the thick leaves that would keep her relatively safe for a while. Not looking where she was going, she ran into someone and they both tumbled over each other.
Hange rubbed her head and opened her eyes and started patting the ground, looking for her glasses. Eventually, she found them and slipped them back on. They were covered in dirt, but she could still see.
She noticed a small boy lying on the ground, groaning. Hange looked at him. She had never seen another child before.
Her parents never let her go into town and insisted she stay in their large estate in the countryside, and they forbid almost any informal interaction between her and their servants.
Hange crawled forwards toward the boy.
"A-are you ok?" she asked quietly.
The boy nodded.
"Watch where you're going next time!" he snapped.
"S-sorry..." Hange replied.
"Tch."
