Levi sat quietly in a padded chair inside the principal's office.
Ms Iisha sat in front of him, tapping her long fingernails on the desk, looking at her long black hair in a handheld mirror.
She was wearing a red Chinese-inspired outfit and her long hair was tied up in a high ponytail that flowed down to her hips.
Travis sat next to Levi, looking mildly smug, like he had some sort of idea that would get him out of this mess.
What is he thinking of? Levi thought.
Levi looked around the room. Ms Iisha seemed to very much like dark colours and old-style furniture. The wallpaper was dark red and the coal-black carpet sat on top of a dark oakwood floor.
Potted plants, all their leaves a shade of dark green, were placed around the room. A single bright lantern lit up the room with orange light.
Levi listened to the old grandfather clock ticking in the corner. It made him anxious.
Ms Iisha sighed and put the mirror down, catching him off guard.
"This is just unacceptable," she said. "I can't believe that after only six weeks we've already had a brawl. Look, Levi, I know this is your first school, but we do not tolerate fighting and bullying in our school!"
"Huh? Bullying? Hold on, I was not bullying anyone!"
"Sweetie, Travis is right there. He told me everything before I told you to come inside."
Levi looked at Travis.
"Wha- But he's lying! Why would you believe him?!"
"Please do not raise your voice, Levi."
"That's avoiding my question!"
"I'm trying my best to be as nice as I can. You shouting at me is not helping."
"Ms Iisha, you haven't even heard my side of the story yet!"
"Do I have to? Travis is one of my most trustworthy students and one of my favourites since he started here. And now, he's a beautiful young senior student, just under two years away from graduating. You think he would start a stupid hallway fight?! Fighting, bullying, and least of all lying about your wrongdoings cannot and will not be tolerated!"
"But Ms, that's favouritism!"
"Accusations as well! You're really getting me riled up, young man! See how much you hurt poor Travis?! That's obvious you're the bully here!
"That just means I'm a better fighter! It doesn't prove anything! I'm telling you, I wouldn't have hurt him if I didn't need to! He hurt my friend!"
"Don't talk back to your superiors! I will suspend you if I have to!"
"Suspend me?! Because of what?! Your favourite student got beat up so you won't even listen to the other person's side of the story?! Is that it?!"
Ms Iisha stood up to try and assert her authority.
"Levi! I will not have you questioning my actions when you are already in hot water! That's it! Suspen-"
Levi stood up and slammed his hands on her desk.
"I didn't do shit! Ok, so I beat him up. That was wrong. I know! But you have no idea what's going on behind the scenes! How much my friend is suffering! None of you teachers ever do and you hardly ever seem to care! That's why I didn't want to go to school in the first place!"
"If your friend is hurting so much then why haven't they talked to anyone?! Your argument makes no sense!"
"She couldn't see for herself until recently! And even then, why would anyone go up to someone and tell them what's going on?! Do you know how scary that is for them?! What if their bullies do something to them!"
