Chapter 2: Derek
"I'll love you, forever and Always"
That's what Derek told me as he sat there on one knee with an engagement ring. He was asking me to marry him, spend the rest of my life with him... Saying yes was my biggest mistake.
What is there to say about Derek? Lets just say that he is a egotistical jerk who has no remorse for his actions even if they hurt you. Derek was my boyfriend before Bryan, I got caught up in his trap my junior year of high school. Caught up to a point where were engaged. Derek was much like Bryan in the way we knew one another. We had played at the same little leagues and usually when me and Bryan were hanging out, Derek was with us. The two boys were best friends, they went to school together, played on the same team and were more like brothers than friends.
I guess before Bryan asked me out he made sure it was cool with Derek. He probably lied and said it was totally fine even though he knew very well he wasn't over us. Derek never came out and said it but he started acting different after we broke up. He would text me all the time, one after the other, usually mean things, then a five page I'm sorry text.I ignored them all, I wasn't about to make yet again another mistake with him.
Derek played on a very good travel team, the team was highly ranked in the country and would go up and down the East coast and Midwest playing games. He would be gone three weeks out of the month, so the little time we had together was nice. We made it work as much as we could that summer. I was happy with Derek, everything seemed fine. Until one day I picked up his phone to make a phone call and read a thread of text messages between him and some girl.
Girl: Hey baby, when are you coming back to town? I wanna see you again :)
Derek: Idk yet, gotta see how are schedule goes and stuff
Girl: Well I hope it's soon because I enjoyed our time together ;)
Derek: haha you showed me a good time, I haven't had that much fun in awhile
Girl: lol well don't let your girlfriend find out I don't want her to go crazy on me lol
Derek: Nah she won't she trust me a ton she never even looks at my phone.
Girl: Well good, I gtg cutie have a good day.
I just kept looking at the phone, trying to hope maybe it was just some joke between him and one of his team mates. He walked in and just looked at me.
"What's wrong?" he said with a smirk on his face
"What the hell is this?!" I said, upset to the point of ready to cry.
The smirk fell off his face and he got a terrified look on his face, he had known what I had found on his phone and that I wasn't happy about it.
"It's nothing, just some girl I met. I means nothing" he explained reaching for the phone but not being successful.
"Don't tell your girlfriend? She won't find out she trust me too much. What the hell Derek, you're an ass" I said, as I choked back tears and threw the phone at him.
For about a week I didn't talk to him, no text, no phone calls nothing. I honestly never wanted to see Derek again. At the start of the summer he put a ring on my finger and wanted to be with me the rest of his life, yet he was sleeping around with girls from other states. After a few weeks I texted him back a thought out two page text.
Me: Honestly what you did hurt me a ton and saying sorry won't fix it Derek. I trusted you and you went behind my back and slept with another girl, and probably more. I never want to see your face again but maybe after a while I'll be able to forgive you. I'll give all your stuff back, I'll give it to your brother, then I won't have to see you. I trusted you Derek and you hurt me really bad. Just know this, we are never ever EVER getting back together. You'll be lucky if we can even stay friends.
I got a text back from him, it simple read "ok" and my heart fell into my stomach. He had given up that easy, yet I should be happy he cheated on me, I should hate his guts. I swallowed my feelings and tried to enjoy my last year of high school.
Me and Bryan hung out more that year, he was in his freshman year of college but we made time for one another. Me and Derek never told the real reason we broke up, we just said it was a mutual agreement and left it at that. Bryan would always ask what happened between us but I never told him the truth, I hated Derek but I didn't want his friendships to be ruined by what went on between us. Besides I had grown feelings for Bryan and wanted that to turn into something more.
