Ranboo's eyes widened as he watched his father raise his fist. Ranboo flinched, waiting for the blow to hit him. But it never did. They heard a small yelp of pain and his eyes darted to Tubbo, who had brought a hand to his face.

Ranboo's brain was a few seconds behind, still trying to comprehend what happened. Then it clicked.

His dad had hit Tubbo.

Ranboo's father was standing over the brunette and had cocked his fist back again. Ranboo recognized the fear and panic that swallowed Tubbo's soft brown eyes, it was the same emotions they had felt too many times in the presence of their father.

No.

No.

"No," Ranboo said loudly, and his father paused, turning to them.

"What did you just say?" he said, his voice dripping with danger. Ranboo swallowed nervously, their heart beating in their throat. He saw Tubbo shaking his head out of the corner of his eye.

"I said, no. He didn't do anything. It's my fault, I invited him here," Ranboo said, and slightly tilted their head to the door, signaling Tubbo to run. The brunette shook his head firmly.

Not without you, he mouthed.

"Who said you could order me around?" Ranboo's father shouted, missing the silent argument between the two teens.

"This is my house, and he is not welcome here," the drunk growled, pushing Ranboo roughly back. The man turned back to Tubbo, and before Ranboo could react, he struck the brunette in the face again. Tubbo cried out and stumbled back.

"Stop!" Ranboo said, pushing himself in between Tubbo and his father.

"You can hurt me, but you will not lay a finger on him again," he said coldly, putting a protective arm in front of the shorter boy.

"Don't try to act tough," Ranboo's father said as he laughed, "You're still a weak, useless girl," the drunk said roughly. Ranboo flinched, shrinking further into himself with each word the man said.

"No, they're not," Tubbo said strongly, stepping forward. Ranboo turned to him, both fearful and surprised.

"You are weak. You are useless. And you will never talk to them that way again, and you'll have to go through me if you ever even try to hurt them," Tubbo said, glaring at Ranboo's father, and slapped the man in the face.

"Fuck you, arsehole," Tubbo spat. The brunette turned to Ranboo, who was still in shock.

"Let's blow this shitshow," Tubbo grabbed Ranboo's hand, and the duo ran out of the house. Ranboo barely managed to grab his suitcase by the door, and in mere seconds the two teens were sprinting down the street.

"Hey!" the voice of the drunk man echoed through Ranboo's head, but they didn't dare slow down. Eventually, they reached Tubbo's house, and quickly went inside. They shut the door behind them and leaned against it, breathing heavily.

"I... wow, that was a lot," Ranboo said, running a hand through his hair.

"Yeah," Tubbo breathed shakily. Ranboo looked over to the brunette, and frowned in concern.

"Your face..." Ranboo said slowly, gently cupping Tubbo's cheek where a bruise was beginning to form.

"It's ok," Tubbo said, wincing slightly. Ranboo frowned, and pulled his friend into a hug.

"I'm so sorry," the tall boy said, feeling Tubbo's arms tighten around him.

"Uhh, am I interrupting something?" Ranboo pulled away from the hug and whipped his head around to see a girl with long brown hair standing in front of them with her hands on her hips.

"This is my sister Lani, and no you weren't interrupting anything," Tubbo said, his face red.

"Hi, I'm Ranboo," the tall boy said, waving awkwardly. Lani nodded, and her eyes traveled to the black suitcase next to Ranboo.

"I'm pretty sure our house isn't an airport," she said, raising an eyebrow. Ranboo suddenly felt guilty, intruding on Tubbo's family like this.

I should just go back home.

"I'm sorry, I'll-" Tubbo interrupted the tall boy.

"Ranboo will be staying with us for a bit," Tubbo explained, giving Lani a look. The girl shrugged

"Ok, just don't go into my room. Mum said dinner will be ready in ten minutes," Lani said. She turned, and headed up the stairs that were to the right of the entryway. Ranboo looked at Tubbo nervously.

"I can't stay here. I'm sorry, I shouldn't have just burst into your house," Ranboo rushed, backing towards the door. Confusion clouded the brunette's eyes.

"Boo, wait-" Tubbo said, grabbing Ranboo's hand.

"I can't, you've already done too much. I don't want to be a burden," Ranboo said anxiously and twisted his hand out of Tubbo's grip. They opened the door and ran out down the street, ignoring Tubbo's shouts as he sprinted away. Ranboo ran past his father's house, and down the next road. He didn't know where they were going, but they knew they had to get away. To go somewhere that he wouldn't be a problem.

When they stopped to rest, they were surprised to find themself in front of their school. It was seemingly empty, of course, except for a small robin perched on the back of a bench by the sidewalk. The bird cocked its head at Ranboo, and the tall boy glared at it.

"I know I messed up, you don't need to look at me like that," they said, rolling their eyes. The bird chirped, sounding almost offended, and flew away.

The tall boy walked over and sat down on the bench, shivering at the cold night air. They buried their head in their hands, guilt and anxiety eating away at his gut.

You're such a burden.

Of course you need Tubbo's help, you're so weak.

Why does he care so much about you? You're insufferable.

Maybe he doesn't even care at all.

He's not gonna chase after you, he doesn't want to waste his time.

You should've stayed with your dad, you deserved everything he did to you.

Ranboo pulled his knees up to his chest, trying to ignore his thoughts to no avail.

He was alone, again. And he had no one to blame but himself
